Well you gotta make sure the audience recognizes the character. Would you have preferred he carried a cross everywhere instead?

(Anonymous) 2014-01-15 12:21 am (UTC)(link)
Wouldn't that be the same issue though? He carried the cross because it was part of the sentence to be crucified. It's a symbol just like the crown of thorns is, so I imagine OP would have the same frustrations. But maybe not. I'm not OP so what do I know? (The answer is nothing.)

Sure, but a huge percent of Jesus art depict his suffering and death so that's the image people recognize best. Especially non-christians.

He could just wear a Hello My Name Is nametag with his name on it. That'd work for me.

That's basically what their shirts are.

OP

The cross would be the same issue. There´s a manga illustration in which Jesus is having what it looks like a birthday cake, and it has a cross decoration on it! It made me cringe so hard!

It seems the mangaka made her research, but obviously you only "get" a religion when you live in a country that has it as a part of its culture. I´d like to invite the mangaka so see one of the Good Friday crucifixions. Crosses and crowns of thorns are not cute at all.

You sound like one of those creepy people who tries to push their religion on everyone who mentions it. It's anime, it's comedy, calm down.

Nah, they sound like someone who takes their religion seriously. I'm impressed they're watching an anime with Jesus as a character.

...Or else they sound like someone who fixates on small factual details and gets driven mad when they're off. Not meaning any insult, OP, I do that, too.

Not at all! I don´t mind if people follow a certain religion or don´t have one. And I´m Catholic, btw.

Yeah... it´s more like that. ^^¡¡¡ That´s why I made this secret, I know its ridiculous to fixate on such detail in a comedy manga of all things.

"obviously you only "get" a religion when you live in a country that has it as a part of its culture"

I disagree, big time - I think to understand a religion you have to spend time among its practitioners, but there are plenty of ways to experience that without living in a 'religious' country. There are plenty of people who study, practice, and convert to beliefs that aren't mainstream in their areas. There are maybe not plenty of Christians in Japan, but they're there and for you to say they don't "get" their religion is kinda offensive. By your reasoning, the only way to "get" Judaism would be to live in Israel, or to "get" Islam would be to live in the Mideast, India, or Indonesia. And that's completely inaccurate.

I don't think the mangaka is trying to make crosses and crowns of thorns "cute." I think she's using them the same way Marvel uses Thor's hammer, or Odin's eye. They're easily recognizable Norse Things that non-believers have at least heard of, and are at least slightly familiar with. Christianity is not a mainstream religion in Japan, and the mangaka needs to use common, recognizable symbols. Which, in Christianity, tend to be instruments of pain. Yes, the Christians are going to know the use is inaccurate, but are you really expecting theological accuracy from this manga?

I didn´t phrase it correctly, sorry about that. I meant that is one thing to study a religion in order to research data for your manga, and other is to live the religion as part of your life since you are born.

(Anonymous) 2014-01-15 05:45 am (UTC)(link)
But by that logic, OP, the mangaka wouldn't be making Buddhist jokes at all because she was raised in a Buddhist-Shintoist nation/culture. And yet, Buddha is the butt of as many jokes as Jesus.

I know of people who were raised into their country's main religion and never "got" it. Meanwhile, a lot of children of immigrants around the world have no problems understanding the minority religion of their parents and practicing it. This isn't a generalization I can agree with.

YMMV, in any case. I went to a Catholic nun school in a Catholic country for 12 years, had a phobia to full-on crucifixes (we had a giant one) and bleeding sacred hearts, and had to go through Via Cruxis praying/angst-singing every Lent Friday. I know Christ's death is fucking HORRIBLE. We had a class once in high school about it with way too many torture porn details for my taste. It's kind of a childhood trauma to me and I still cringe at full-on crucifixes a bit as a grown adult. However, I find Saint Young Men hilarious and the crown or his stigmata never bothered me there. YMMV.

There's a lot of classical art that has figures like Jesus or Joseph wearing crosses as ornamentation, and to me it's the same sort of thing. And those were by people who were trying to be gravely serious.
