Well you gotta make sure the audience recognizes the character. Would you have preferred he carried a cross everywhere instead?

Wouldn't that be the same issue though? He carried the cross because it was part of the sentence to be crucified. It's a symbol just like the crown of thorns is, so I imagine OP would have the same frustrations. But maybe not. I'm not OP so what do I know? (The answer is nothing.)

The cross would be the same issue. There´s a manga illustration in which Jesus is having what it looks like a birthday cake, and it has a cross decoration on it! It made me cringe so hard!

It seems the mangaka made her research, but obviously you only "get" a religion when you live in a country that has it as a part of its culture. I´d like to invite the mangaka so see one of the Good Friday crucifixions. Crosses and crowns of thorns are not cute at all.

That would bother me as well.

True but I usually though that it was because that's how Jesus is recognizable to the Japanese considering it isn't a Christian country by no means.

Maybe Jesus wants to wear it ironically? You know. look at me overcoming humiliation, punishment and death thing. And it looks cool and tasteful, you can't go around wearing an actual crown or anything.

I like this. Hell yeah, cute ironic hipster Jesus taking the thorn crown back :)

This is what I was thinking...

I thought it as less of an irony thing and more of a super enthusiastic, super keen, super trusty, super taking everything with positivity thing. Not saying those are the real Jesus's character, but those are definitely the anime Jesus's.

Obviously for comedic rose growth.

He's trying to reclaim it.

I sort of agree (especially since ever since I found out about this series it occurred to me that it would be perfect for me and my girlfriend to cosplay from for multiple reasons, one of which being that neither of us is too uptight to be silly about our respective religions, but I kind of cringe at adding THAT to the costume) but I just have to remind myself that different cultures view Christianity in different ways, and in this case it's not like the mangaka is trying to use it as mockery, just a recognizable "feature".

The fact that this series exists at all sort of fills me with all kinds of warm fuzzies, honestly, so I'm willing to excuse a few things about it that could be taken as offensive.

If you haven't watched it yet, it's a very nice time! If you have, woo-hoo, someone else who gets fuzzies from it existing c: I watched the OVAs and the movie for the first time in the last couple of weeks, and I had a lot of fun with it. It makes me wish I could buy manga translations to support it, but I'll probably have to import.

In the gospels he let Thomas stick his hand into the spear wound on his side to confirm his identity. I don't think he'd be so bothered by the crown that he wouldn't wear it for identification's sake.

It is, but if you don't like Japanese style humor it may not be your cup of tea.

I'm assuming it's for recognizability and just to make Jesus stand out even more as "one of those weirdo foreigners renting that apartment". He and Buddha are supposed to stick out of the crowd because try as they might, they're not mere mortals. And Japan isn't a Christian country, so they might not have the same reaction to equate long-haired, bearded hippie-like men with Jesus like we'd do in the West without a bit more accessorizing.

Japan is hilariously awkward about Christianity?? You don't say!

That being said, the comments here have convinced me to watch this.

Well, the manga itself lampshades it and the (silly) justification being that it's not a real crown of thorns, but actually a thing with a GPS installed they sorta forced him to wear so the archangels can check on him when he gets lost. He doesn't wear it in Heaven, just while he's in Japan.

That said, this series kinda jokes around almost every religious figure and symbol from both Christianism and Buddhism. So yeah, it's not going to be of your liking if such a minor stuff bothers you.
