Ariel wanted to go to the human world long before she fell in love.

Plus, the thing that pushed her to leave the water wasn't her want to run to Eric, it was her want to run from her father. The scene where he turns her grotto into a smoldering wreckage was pretty scary - is it surprising she ran away from home? Pretty standard 16 year old behavior.

Yeah, that scene freaked me out and made me mad as far back as I can remember watching it. I thought it was seriously messed up even as a little kid.
