Ariel wanted to go to the human world long before she fell in love.

If you think wanting legs was only about the guy, you weren't paying enough attention.

Believe me this is not an unpopular opinion.

But might I direct you to the song "Part Of Your World" and the fact that it was sung before Ariel knew who Eric was? She was obsessed with the surface world.People always seem to forget that part.

I mean I'm not saying you have to like her or anything, but just that her interest in the surface world has already existed , and Eric was probably just one reason on top of many that she made her choice. and I also get the feeling that the real conflict of the movie was actually between Ariel and her father. When you look at it from that perspective that it was Ariel chasing independence it sort of puts a new light on things, imo at least.

But hey, you're entitled to your opinion and that's cool. I apologize if I seemed rude.

Ariel didn't leave her world and family just for a guy. She was interested in the human world before she met Eric. Like, she had a whole cave of stuff signifying her fascination with it. Eric, and her father's reaction to her crush on him, were just the tipping points that made her decide to act on her interest.

At least she was shown to have a passion for the human world or maybe just exploring the unknown in general before the dude showed up. I agree it may not have been written with the most feminist mindset, but I don't think Ariel's entire life is supposed to revolve around Eric.

(Anonymous) 2014-01-15 12:24 am (UTC)(link)
Eh, he was just an excuse. She'd be wanting to go on land and escape her family for awhile, he just was a really good excuse/reason to latch on to.

[personal profile] kallanda_lee 2014-01-15 12:26 am (UTC)(link)
Well, her family was pretty "problematic" too, namely her dad was pretty damn controlling. She was reaching adulthood, and wanted to go out and see the world. The guy was the catalyst, but not the cause. Kids grow up and get their own lives, OP. That's not problematic, that's the way it's supposed to go.

Eh, as others have said, she wanted to go to the human world first. She's like that, say, American girl who fangirls over England or Japan or something, everything about it is totally awesome and her world sucks and no one understands her, anyway. They get all the cool stuff (gadgets and gizmos, you know), and her dad is so overbearing.

Which really isn't healthy either. lol Bet you six months in, she gets super homesick and wants to go back, cursing the human world forever.

Because it's not like she'd been fascinated by the human world for forever, and sang an entire song dedicated to that before she ever met Eric. Not to mention what her father had done to her collection shortly before she made this decision. If my father had done something like that to me, I wouldn't think twice about getting as far away from him as possible.

Even as a kid I had issues with this, once I was old enough to think about what I was watching. (Before that, I loved it.) But in retrospect... I can see both your point and the points people here have already raised, that Ariel was really just trying to be independent period.

And is it really that unusual to meet a guy, get a glimpse of what life could be through him (a life you've always kind of wanted anyway) and go for it?

(Anonymous) 2014-01-15 12:33 am (UTC)(link)
Worked for my great-grandparents. Not that I'm condoning the practice, but they seriously met and ran off together three days later and were pretty happy till he died in the war. But there's other factors there like my great-grandmother being kind of lazy and selfish and wanting to get out of the house so that she wouldn't be stuck nursing her aging mother. (That fell to the left-behind youngest sister.)

(Anonymous) 2014-01-15 12:34 am (UTC)(link)
Be honest. You've never seen this movie in your life, have you?

(Anonymous) 2014-01-15 12:35 am (UTC)(link)
Thankfully, other people have already pointed out some of the problems with your summary, but let's see:

-Ariel had a lifelong interest in the surface world and exploring what lay beyond her father's kingdom.
-She was sixteen, but Triton wouldn't let her leave the castle without a chaperone.
-Triton's response to an act of disobedience was to destroy an entire room full of Ariel's most treasured belongings in a rage.
-Ariel didn't seem to have a close relationship with any of her sisters, and all her animal friends came with her on her journey to the surface.

I think it's pretty clear that Ariel traded up. She didn't leave everything that was important to her for a guy she barely knew; she got out of a controlling and potentially dangerous home environment to follow her dreams. Eric was as much a "way out" as he was a romantic interest.

If you think the Disney movie is bad, read the original story by H.C. Andersen. It's so, so much worse.

My feeling is this: It's her choice. As long as she's making the choice of her own free will, I don't see the problem.

Also, let's not forget the fact that her father is border-line abusive. I don't think destroying your daughter's possessions just because you don't like them is going to win you Father of the Year. I can see why she'd want to get away from him, to be honest

I never liked the movie either, ever since I was little. Couldn't even tell you why because I don't object to it for its problems or whatever. I just never found it to be as great a movie as all of the other popular Disney films of the time.

I also found Prince Eric's design so bland so I always get the stinkeye from friends who had crushes on him when they were little.

I mean the "leaving your home, family and friends", not necessarily "for some guy you've only just met, who barely knows you exist" (and I do agree with other commenters in this thread that he was much more catalyst than driving reason). Some go to college, some go exploring, some get jobs, and yes, some do find someone and marry young - not everyone moves away, but a fair amount do.

(Anonymous) 2014-01-15 02:07 am (UTC)(link)

Ugh, do you dumbasses actually watch the movie before you bitch and complain?

(Anonymous) 2014-01-15 02:10 am (UTC)(link)
Meh. I'm kind of over judging girls for doing things because of a guy. It's a reason among many, as others have said, and even if it wasn't? She's a teenager, it happens.
