I'm terrible at estimating so everything I measure will be exact. I have no idea what half a cup of flour means, so I only follow recipes that call for precisely 200g of flours.

huh? half a cup of flour means half a cup of flour. you take your half-cup measure and fill it with flour.

Oh well, half the recipes my family uses are, well, family recipes, and 'half a cup of flour' means 'fill half a teacup with flour'. Occasionally, it means 'half a mug'. The only apparatus my mother uses to accurately measure stuff is weighing scales.

oh, i see. yeah, that would be confusing, i'd rather not work with directions like that either.

Oh, man. I have an Elizabeth David cookbook which I adore but which uses measurements like that: a wineglass full of broth or something. So weird.

Maybe they don't have them where you live, but in the US we have measuring cups that have markings for 1 cup, 1/2 cup, 3/4 cup, and 2/3 cups. Or we have different sized cups that are exactly that amount. Although sometimes if I can't find my measuring cups I use a coffee mug and just fill it about halfway, but that's not exact.

Oh I see. Indeed, we do not have those here. So yeah, we just use teacups and coffee mugs. My mum's pretty good at estimating what those mean, so I thought everybody was just supposed to do that.
