Kind of a fandom secret, but not really a secret: I sometimes regret going to places like smogon and finding out how best to train my Pokemon. I used to just go, 'Gosh that Pokemon is adorable, I want it on my team!' but these days the first thing I evaluate Pokemon by is their stats. 'Yeah that Pokemon is cute, but it can't do anything with that defence stat!' I mean, it's opened up a new world for me, I love my friends, I love Pokemon even more, but I feel silly when somebody asks me 'What's your favourite Pokemon?' and I go 'Greninja! Just look at that amazing speed and special attack!'

Awwww, maybe try the best of both worlds? Do a little of both?

I've been trying to get into the stats thing but I'm having trouble. I've been looking over all the competitive breeding stuff and I feel like it's more complicated than my old genetics lab. But I love the breeding aspect of the game so I have a new plan.

I'm thinking of creating a story with my pokemon. I'll keep breeding them until they have the nature and moves that I want (e.g. a lonely gastly with scary face) but I'm not going to worry about the stats. So basically once I beat the Elite Four I'll be using the game as a high-tech doll house.

Oh really? I found it made my head spin the first time too, but then I tried it out a bit and found there's nothing to it really. A bit tedious, but then I started playing dollhouse too (a Pokemon breeder who painstakingly breeds Pokemon for other Trainers, new and old!) and it was awesome. I still love making stories for my Pokemon - I'm aware of the fact that I only have an Archeops because I'm too fond of him to get rid of him despite his terrible ability.

To be fair though Gereninja is really cool looking and has a super fun hidden ability.

I definitely do both. I love Pokemon with cool aesthetics and I won't raise a Pokemon if I don't like it. But I also like to raise effective teams. You can find a balance!

I love Greninja's ability too, but when he turns to something with a common weakness (like Ice or Grass), it leaves him very open, and his defences don't help. I don't use him in 3v3 single battles, he'd just be a burden on the team. He's awesome on Rotation Battles though.

Yeah, you're right. I'd still never take a Metagross on my team. He may have good stats, but he is essentially a floating lump of mineral, which is so lame.

Ironically, I love Metagross. I think he is super baws. But there are some very, very popular competitive Pokemon I would never run because they just don't appeal to me, such as Salamence, Goodra, or Keldeo

Okay, I can kind of understand Salamence and Goodra, although Goodra has really grown on me lately, but Keldeo?! He's adorable. I'm not a big fan of his typing, but he is just so cute!

I just think Keldeo's design is really messy. idk. In general I was disappointed with the minor legendaries of Gen V. I only really like Virizion and sort of Terrakion. They have cleaner, sleeker designs.

I'm in the same boat. T-T I've gotten really into X and Y, which is fun, because I hadn't really played Pokemon since I was a kid. But I slowly started learning about IVs and EVs and base stats, and now I feel the experience is starting to become more mathematical than adventurous. I keep checking smogon or other sites to have the Pokemon I like evaluated, and turns out some of my favorites I now feel like I can't use because their base stats are bad or something. Sure, I want to be able to do well in the Battle Institute, but it's not like I'm going to compete in any tournaments so I don't know why I've started to care so much.

Oh dude I totally feel you about your favs turning out to be lame. I used to adore Ampharos and I was so disappointed when I found out that her best stats are horrible. That's not to say some of my old favs can't still find a spot on my team - practically any Pokemon can be use well, ofc, but yeah, it can be disappointing.
