I always found it a bit weird the uniforms were color-coded.

Want to kill the command crew? The security forces? They are easily identifiable, here's a pie chart.

Considering the vast majority of their battles took place between ships in space that wasn't really a huge problem.

I dunno, I always figured that they didn't get into that kind of trouble very often, despite all the redshirts that died in TOS. They always seemed to come up against shipwide threats more often. And random hostile aliens of the week might not even be able to distinguish those colors from each other, let alone know what each color signified. So it still benefitted Starfleet overall to have specialized uniforms that they could recognize each other by.

We are probably both overthinking it lol, but that's my take.

Okay, to be perfectly fair, in the US Navy if you're out to sea some people are literally color coded shirt-wise and stamped with work places and jobs. I had a nice blue turtleneck in tropical weather that proudly (that was sarcasm...) proclaimed me to be a PLANE HANDLER. Because everything in the military yells. Including the toilets.
