I don't think that negates the compliments. You're still able to take those ideas and transform them into a, presumably, well written story. And that takes talent.

Writers will often look for inspiration or plots or prompts from outside sources, it doesn't make you a bad writer.

Is it...bad to get your ideas from Tumblr?

[personal profile] elephantinegrace 2014-01-17 12:18 am (UTC)(link)
I mean, it's your words that you're putting together. Sentences that you came up with. So the motivating idea wasn't something that dropped into your head from the sky. So what? No one else is ever going to write that fic the way you did. No one else is ever going to interpret that Tumblr post the way you did, and the fact that you can interpret it and put it into a story that people like makes you a great, original writer.

I agree. People worry too much about having an entirely original idea and don't realize that all the little details that come with the hard work of actually writing it will make the final product into something personal and unique.

This, right here. Ideas are a dime a dozen, and execution is everything. The worst idea ever can be great with beautiful execution, and the best most original idea ever can be absolute shit with horrible execution.

Originality is the art of concealing your source.

Seriously, creativity is about taking what you see and letting your imagination run with it. If you feel like a fraud because it seems too "easy", you're probably talented.

Don't sweat it, OP. Ideas are the easiest part of writing because they're everywhere. Some people might get inspired by people they know, current events, historical events, whatever. You just happen to get yours from discussions on tumblr, it's no biggie.

Ideas are overrated. It's what you do with them that matters.

Writers get ideas from all sorts of places, anon, not just from some hallowed holy grail of internal creativity. There's a reason why the saying goes that most forms of creativity is stealing ideas and making them your own.

(Anonymous) 2014-01-18 12:31 am (UTC)(link)
I pretty much write from comments I see and my dreams. Coming up with ideas out of nowhere, especially ones that fit together, can be hard. Keep writing OP!
