I've never gotten the fuss over her either. Tbh, she has always annoyed the hell out of me. Her voice is grating.

(Anonymous) 2014-01-17 03:52 am (UTC)(link)
Her voice is the best part.

What's wrong with her costume and name? Sure, it's silly and gimmicky, but it fits her personality. Batman villains - well, superhero villains in general - are no strangers to ridiculous costumes and names. At least Harley's suits her.

Don't forget the Riddler has a genius intellect yet is known to run around in a skintight green jumpsuit emblazoned with question marks. And his name is E. Nigma.

The Riddler's real name is Edward Nashton. He specifically had his name changed to Edward Nigma solely so he could call himself E. Nigma.

Also, Suit Riddler is best Riddler.

i think harleen quinzel would be a cute name if it wasn't for this particular stupid pun

Compared to his other villains I don't see why she's the only weird and bland one. They all seem like her to me.

They're actually very different. Joker is not the same as Two Face is not the same as Penguin is not the same as Black Mask. Riddler isn't always strictly a bad guy (but he IS always an asshole) Penguin is sort of a neutrally evil crime boss who mostly just wants his fingers in a lot of pies and is a good source of information. Black Mask is in a lot of ways your classic mob scumbag, but he went through some changes and now he's a gleefully sadistic torturer ON TOP of being a mob scumbag. Joker is straight up unpredictable, Harley is more predictable in that her motives are usually based around her obsession with love and obsession with the Joker.

I get why people love her. It's because unlike many female villains, she isn't some smooth, elegant femme fatale. She's a totally whacky goof-ball and that's nice and different to see. What I don't get is people who genuinely dig her relationship with the Joker. It's really fucking creepy seeing young girls all over the net going on about wanting to find "the Joker to my Harley." Fuck no. Eurgh.

Yea, that's why I like her. Er...the 'Joker to my Harley' thing is all kinds of wrong though. I understand that people have different kinks so if that relationship appeals to them alright, but wanting that kind of relationship for yourself is extremely unhealthy.

We had the same type in the MLP fandom for a while. They really latched on to the villain Discord, playing up his status as a chaotic, dangerous figure, while at the same time framing him as fundamentally redeemable if only someone would love him.

Yeah, and you thought the thirty-year-old men were the creepiest MLP fans. Thankfully, Discord's fandom seems to have died down a bit after friendship, not love, redeemed him in canon.

I like Harley, but I'll admit I mostly like her when she is for one reason or another working separately from the Joker. Then she gets to have agency, and I find her really fun in a Looney Tunes sort of way.

(Also, she and Ivy are totally lovers whenever she and the Joker are on a break. Nothing will convince me otherwise.)

Posting to voice my wholehearted agreement with you, Nonnie. I came to say this.

(Anonymous) 2014-01-17 01:35 am (UTC)(link)
No need to be convinced otherwise, one of her creators (I can't remember if it was Bruce Timm or Paul Dini, or possibly both?) have confirmed :D

(makes it much less incidental how Ivy haaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaates the Joker)

Yupyupyup. And Ivy wants more, and Harley keeps promising it, but then going back to the Joker. I have a whooooole head canon around Ivy having way deeper feelings for Harley than Harley has for her but settling for sex because she doesn't think she can get anything else.

This is where I should say stuff about how everyone's entitled to their own preferences and opinions when it comes to fiction, but I actually would just be secretly going "SHUT YO MOUTH, HARLEY QUINN IS BAKED PERFECTION WITH PERFECTION FROSTING" so I might as well not lie. ;)

(Anonymous) 2014-01-17 12:41 am (UTC)(link)
The dynamic between her and the Joker is one that really appeals to me in fiction. Call it a kink. I don't think that's the majority's reason, though, because other characters who are parts of similar dynamics don't enjoy the same level of popularity...

I've always found her character to be boring at best, really annoying at worst.

I don't really get the appeal.
Then again, I don't really tend to ever get the appeal of "~TTLY RaNDUM~ XD" characters in general.

(Anonymous) 2014-01-17 09:16 am (UTC)(link)
She's the one of the few non-bombshell girls in the animated series, she's allowed to be goofy and to fail, she gets out of trouble with a wink and a joke, and she regularly enrages her boyfriend by doing his schtick better than him. What's not to like?

I know the fact that her motive for crime involves mostly Joker obsession bothers people, but I always thought Harley might be too formidable with a more villainous motive. She's legitimately smart and resourceful under all that camp, and the Darkwing Duck comics have already shown me where that transformation goes. XP

(Anonymous) 2014-01-17 11:26 pm (UTC)(link)
I think some people underestimate her or take her for granted (like fandoms often do with characters). She had a lot going on before she met the Joker and lost her mind. But because some fans just don't bother to do background check. But I think most like her just for the insanity (not her past life) and the crazy outfit that's iconic and easily recognized.

Although, after she got crazy, her life is all about the Joker, so I agree with the over-simplicity and the over-hype. But she's simple which might be easy to be liked.
