I always find it funny when people say "nitpicking/awareness of issues dampened my enjoyment of X" and people read it as "I CAN"T ENJOY ANYTHING EVER AGAIN AHHHHH".

Have you never seen some of those types on Tumblr? They watch a show and literally all they do is complain about how terrible and problematic every little thing is. They use a special brand of mental gymnastics to explain why an awesome character (ex. Mary in Sherlock) is actually terrible.

So no, when you watch a show/movie/video game and all you do is make dozens of posts of how terrible it is and how much you hate it, I don't think you can enjoy things to the same extent as someone who is not writing dozens of tumblr posts about how much they hate this thing.

Yeah. I read posts like that and wonder why the poster bothers watching since the show seems to send them into a foaming rage.

I followed one person who watched SPN and just hated it. Every week she watched it again. WHY WOULD YOU DO THAT? That is an hour out of your life!

That is a thing actually. Some people love to hate watch stuff. I just...can't find the energy to watch an hour long show every week of something I hate.

Exactly. The hate makes them feel superior and smart. Because they know what's wrong! They're so enlightened in their rage!

And it's one thing to watch something that you like, but some aspects you hate, and then you think about how it could be better, or maybe even go and make it better in fanworks. It's another thing to watch JUST FOR THE HATE because knowing enough to hate it gives you this sense of superiority.

I get that you obviously think people who disagree with you are totes making it up all in their head. I don't think you're just talking about hatewatchers, I think you're talking about anyone you don't agree with.

There are people who watch a show and criticize it while still watching the show. I know this and I follow a fairly well known Supernatural fan who writes great meta about this.

But then there is this whole other set of people (like hate watchers) who I just feel pity for.

Yeah, see though, fandom secrets had a pretty vigorous debate about Mary yesterday, and you just went and dismissed half the arguers as gratuitous hatewatchers. I really do think you're deliberately mischaracterising people you disagree with.
