I don't think Viserys hated Dothraki culture for any of the right reasons, though. Like, just guessing, but I'm pretty sure Viserys didn't give a shit about who anybody was raping considering the way he treated Dany. Also I don't really know what to do with the "ignorant" and "savage" comments considering the other cultures in the world aren't exactly much more enlightened about how to treat women, they just have quieter systematic modes to hide behind while doing the same shit. Or they just more closely resemble historically white culture while doing the exact same things.

This. Viserys was the one who sold his own sister into sex slavery so he could get a badass army and try to be king. He hated the Dothraki because he thought they were beneath him, and only wanted to use them as his killing machines. He didn't give a shit about rape or about his sister.

Pretty much this.

I can't speak for absolutely everywhere in Essos, but Westeros doesn't seem to have any concept of marital rape and does have arranged marriages not requiring consent of the parties involved.

IIRC, the Dothraki did have a raiding-based economy (is there an anthropological term for this?). This is not very conducive to enlightened behavior by our standards. Then again, persons boasting about their abilities to conquer things should probably not be throwing stones there, either...

Yeah, this is what I came here to say. It's not that the rape and abuse aspects of Dothraki culture are remotely okay, but Viserys didn't hate them for those reasons (and himself abused and molested Danaerys). He hated them because he saw them as less than himself, and that isn't okay. His scorn showed up in lines about how they dressed, smelled, ate, etc. -- basically all shallow and ethnocentric issues. He didn't give a shit about the way they treated women and was complicit in it himself. Like, does OP forget the line where he told Dany he'd let thousands of Dothraki rape her if it got him the crown? Or that he used what status he did have to abuse Dothraki women?

I'm certainly not arguing that the Dothraki are super awesome in all aspects, or that Dany is flawless, but she is the one who attempts to embrace the good and neutral aspects of Dothraki culture, establish herself as a pseudo-insider, then use her status to change the treatment of women within. It isn't perfect by any means -- Mirri Maz Duur's anger at her comes in part from Dany's proclamation that women under her protection would not be raped, AFTER she had already been raped multiple times. Dany also has quite a few issues where she tries to play savior to people who do not believe they need saving, which is another strain of ethnocentrism that she should be critiqued for (and which critique I think the narrative invites), but she at least *tries*.

I don't think Viserys was a good guy, but I did like that he wasn't all "isn't this just amazing?" about the Dothraki like Dany and Jorah seemed to be.

That's because Viserys doesn't think anything is amazing but Viserys.

He considered them inferior because in his eyes they were just wild dirty primitive people, different from where he came from. Daenerys is far more critical of the Dothraki norms in ways that actually matter.
