Tropes are not bad, and using the same tropes does not make you a bad writer. Furthermore some tropes are the hot chocolate or warm duvet of storytelling, people just like them. Genderbender tropes, despite a movement by SJs to be more "realistic", for example, with the immediate (or gradual) acceptance of new form, changing of pronouns, and clothes shopping scenes will always generate massive positive feedback and a genderbender writer will always get a lot of good feedback (and some SJs screaming at them for writing something people enjoy in the way the SJer thinks is wrong). Same with people who write picnic trope works, and steam trains too.

It is reasonable that if you find yourself getting pegged as a |whatever-trope|-writer instead of just a writer that you want to expand your repertoire, but you have to accept that some types of trope usage and genre are more popular than others. If you crafted those other tropes well then it is only natural that a lot of your fans want their warm feelgood-duvet back. It is the burden you have to bear as a writer. The eternal wordsmith's dilemma: are you going to be cliche yet popular or adventurous and indie?
