Blue is the Warmest Color

(Anonymous) 2014-01-18 12:42 am (UTC)(link)
So this film has been getting rave reviews and lots of people have named it one of the best of last year. Everything I've read points to this being right up my alley, from subject matter to tone to style. And yet I don't want to see it because... I just can't get over the fact that it's 3 hours long.

Very few films need to be 3 hours long. Very few films should be 3 hours long. Unless you've got some seriously epic stuff going on, there should be no excuse. To me, it's a sign that the director lacks restraint and the ability to self-edit. Maybe if I were one of those people paid to watch movies (i.e. critics, who loved the film), I'd be down with that, but damn it, people have other things to do in their lives.

Then again, I might have thought the same about The Wolf of Wall Street if I'd known about its length prior to viewing, and I did end up enjoying the film. But I feel like I can forgive a successful comedy more for running roughshod over time limits than I can a relationship drama, though.

I haven't seen the movie you're talking about, but I don't see the point in fixing an arbitrary length limit on movies. That's not to say that tight pacing isn't a virtue, but some stories are naturally longer than others and take more time to tell, even when they're told concisely.

There's a point where enjoyment turns into fatigue. That point is not the same for everyone, so a fixed universal limit is impossible. But for most people, 3 hours is really pushing it. You can rationalize it all day but "3-hour romantic drama" is a hard pitch to sell.

You should come on over to Bollywood; I'm sure you'd love it there.

I put on Bollywood movies in the background when I do work at home. The music soothes me.

I agree.

That being said, I hated this movie. They gave us no reason to invest in the main relationship, it fell completely flat. The director's gross behavior toward the main actresses really showed.

Also, whoop, another "bi girl dates lesbian but cheats on her with a man" story to add to the list.

You're not missing much anyway. It was a terrible movie imo.

Is that the one with the controversy about it being a movie about lesbians that was written by a man and said to be inaccurate by lesbian film writers/directors?

Re: Blue is the Warmest Color

(Anonymous) 2014-01-18 01:09 am (UTC)(link)
Even the author of the graphic novel disliked it.

I haven't heard about that controversy, but I do know this is the French lesbian film with the controversial extended sex scene with the prominent use of prosthetic genitals.

I don't know why a man writing an accurate lesbian film should even be a controversy anyway. He could have worked with actual gay women in the writing process.

Ah, my mistake, I thought you'd said it was an accurate film. Forget the second point then.

I thought it was that the actresses felt violated because of long sex scenes.

Very few films need to be 3 hours long.

Citation needed.

Why don't you instead try to sell me on the idea that more films should be 3 hours long?

DA

Because you're the one making the initial claim and the burden of proof falls on you?

I made an argument and provided brief reasoning to back it up: Unless you've got some seriously epic stuff going on, there should be no excuse. To me, it's a sign that the director lacks restraint and the ability to self-edit. There isn't need to say more until someone provides a counterargument.

About Blue is the Warmest Color, I've heard some bad things about the filming of it and the director. Might turn you off, but YMMV. http://www.awardsdaily.com/blog/the-stars-of-blue-is-the-warmest-color-open-up-about-a-rough-shoot-playing-lesbian-lovers/

Ugh. It seems a lack of restraint is the least of this director's problems. This guy seriously sounds like one of those people who think being an auteur justifies treating their employees like crap. My least favorite kind of directors.

The comic book is good, although (because?) it is very teenage and dramatic. The movie is not so good, at times it felt like a pastiche of what people think of as French cinema, lots of thoughtful and sad looks.

Re: Blue is the Warmest Color

(Anonymous) 2014-01-18 11:29 am (UTC)(link)
Some reviews said that those long, lingering "French cinema" moments are exactly what caused the movie to be so unforgivingly long.
