Why do people keep repeating this? It's empiricaly not true, things are so much more complicated than that, and yes one of the variables is in fact sex.

That doesn't suddenly mean people are saying it's okay, anymore than saying that yes sometimes robbery is partially about money not just power.

Because it's a counterbalance to the common misconception that rape is exclusively about sex, and it's much more true that it's exclusively about power than it is about sex. And because talking about it exclusively in terms of sex can be used to justify a lot of really shitty, awful conclusions.

If you are going to make a simplification about rape, it is much more correct to simplify it down to power.

Because a common incorrect belief about rape is "he wanted to have sex with her so badly he couldn't control himself," which makes it sound like the problem lies in the rapist having absolutely no power over his (or her, but in discussions it's usually a man, blahblah) actions.

Because, like any problem, it feel better to those who are not directly affected to simplify it. If you simplify it, you can convince yourself it will never happen to you.

"It's because she was wearing that skirt. If I don't dress like that, I won't get raped."
"It's only strangers/poor people/non-whites/etc who do it. If I don't go into that part of the city, I won't get raped."
"It's because men are all sex-starved animals. If I don't trust any man ever, I can stay a step ahead of them, and I won't get raped."
"It's because it's about power. If I avoid people who turn everything into a power play, I won't get raped."

Whenever this comes up, I remember this one story about a serial rapist.

One of his victims he met, took back home to his apartment, tried to initiate sex, she did not give consent, and he raped her. Another he met, took back home to his apartment, tried to initiate sex, she gave consent, he tied her up and threatened her with a knife, she revoked consent, and then he raped her.

So yeah. Sex is involved, but for many cases it is not the main motivator.

One of my friends told a story about how her mom scared off some guys who were threatening to gang rape her. All she did was face them and be like "Sure, go ahead and fuck me, I'm waiting!" They ran away.

Eh, because it if it were purely - or even largely - about sex, there's nothing stopping these men from hiring a sex worker/escort/watching porn and using a fleshlight.

Like people who take creepshots, the fact that the person in question is not consenting to it is preetttttyyy much the whole point. (Otherwise they too could look at any of a billion pictures of naked people/people in their underwear and get off to those. They don't, because the whole point is to violate an unwilling person's privacy.)

It's not just about sex. A huge part of it is in the feeling of power - in controlling another human being. Sex may factor into it, but it's not at the core of it.

Yeah, basically this. Violating someone unwilling/unknowing/helpless is a big part of the point for rapists.

Because wow, it's misandrist as fuck to claim rape is about sex, since all of these claims are pretty much solely made with the assumption that the perpetrator is male.

It's also just completely untrue that the sexual aspect of rape is the focus or cause of most general types of rape that occur. Of course there's a sexual aspect, but if that were the only aspect you'd get the type of person who'd be more likely to limit their criminal activity to soliciting prostitutes, indecent exposure, peeping, or other sex crimes.

That's a completely fatuous analogy though, OP, because no one claims that robbery is about "power". Numerous studies have proven a causal link between theft and poverty. There is no corresponding link between how much access there is to sex and rape. In numerous societies where prostitution is either legal or cheap and plentiful or both, rates of rape are sky high. In other words, while theft is the result of a lack of resources, rape has nothing whatsoever to do with a lack of sex; ergo, it is primarily about something else entirely, and many psychologists and other scholars have, based on research, posited that it is about power and control.

What basis do you have for claiming that it's all or even to a considerable extent about sex?
