I honestly think there's a big difference between book fans and series fans. Most book fans I met like Stannis. I have no great love for the guy.

But then, the way I "like" characters is mostly based on how complex they are, and how their brain works. And I find Stannis to be rigid and bland.

I have a love/hate relationship with book Stannis. Or maybe a sort-of-like/don't-like, since the feelings aren't that strong, lol. On the one hand, I do think he's more complex than some readers do, because I appreciate that he is this Lawful Good character who still has to struggle with the realities of compromise, and that he seems to really be the only contender for the crown who gets that the real war is North of the Wall and is willing to take that on instead of staying in the South to fight the civil war. On the other hand, I'm glad we haven't had to read his POV.

I'm more of a book fan than show fan and I dislike Stannis. Compared to most of the rest of the cast, he's a reasonably good guy, I just don't think he'd be a good king. Plus, he is pretty boring.

Melisandre, on the other hand... I hated her when she first arrived, started liking her more as she went (in my perception) crazy cultist to actual person of power, to really liking her once we had a chapter from her perspective.

I don't know, he's kind of shitty to his wife and keeps his daughter locked up because she's disfigured. He's also a bit callous with the lives of others, but that seems to be a thing with everyone but Daenerys.

Well to be fair his wife is a level of batshit that would make me want to avoid her.

Show!Stannis =/= book!Stannis.

Book!Stannis actually cares about his daughter (to the extent someone as rigid and awkward as he is capable of anyway) and is one of the few men in GOT who insists his daughter should inherit the throne despite being female. He's also not a pathetic sex fiend like his show version and is not quite such a douche to his wife.
