None? Why use it at all if you don't like it? Just say "it's cool, but it's not my thing." Or...just don't say anything at all.

Friend you don't like or icon you don't like? I would assume friend, but you never know.

As for time, I don't get it. You can both like the same icon. Does using the same icon as someone else have to mean something?

No, friend makes you an icon that you don't like.

I'd say a month or so. Or use it only for posts/comments meant for them.

3 months or so if you interact a lot. Use it in replies to them for sure. If you don't spend much time in the same circles (like maybe you got it in an exchange type event), maybe a month or so. If you get another icon in another different exchange after that but in a shorter amount of time, swap out then.

You must always use the friend's icon.

Er, so, they made you an icon but you don't like it, so you want to know how long you 'have' to keep using it? Uh, I don't think you do, really. You can just thank them for being so thoughtful, find something to compliment about it, then say you appreciate it. I doubt they're going to be stalking your userpics page making sure you uploaded their icon...

By that, I don't mean that I'm disagreeing with your comment that OP's pal won't do that. /i am so awkward.

LOL, I gotcha anon. I love looking at people's icons too and occasionally I do make it to someone's icon page (especially if I like an icon but can't recognize what's in it). Or if I want to see who the maker is so I can look at what else they've made, or if I'm just curious...

But making an icon for someone and then being like "Becky didn't use my icon. Becky is bantha poodoo!" would be a bit of an overreaction. (Just a bit.)

For lj or something else? For lj, use a couple of times when you're sure they'll see it, then stop using it.

As a conflict-avoidant type of person, I say at least a month. But like others have mentioned, you can use it only in response to them. When you feel like enough time has passed (probably 1-3 months would be sufficient), you can "clean out" your icons so it doesn't look like you just deleted theirs. Even if you re-upload a lot of the ones you had before, you can change some out, redo keywords, etc.

That's what I did when I roleplayed on LJ and I felt bad when someone made me icons I didn't like, anyway. Then I just learned to make them by myself.
