Been on a bit of a daemon kick, lately. I was going to ask for daemonfic recs but I am rather fandom centric, so instead I thought I'd have a bit more fun with it.

Sticking to the usual daemon 'rules' or standards - non-magical humans can't have bird daemons and usually don't have fish daemons, and larger animals tend to 'shrink' in daemon form until they're about human size, and there can be unusual colors or minor trait variations - what do you think your daemon would be?

Or, if you're not sure, try describing yourself and see if maybe other people here can come up with/guess a good daemon for you. :)

I'd probably have a large cat of some kind, as I'm a bit predatory and a lot independent. I can work with other people, but I work best either in charge or on my own. I'm rather aggressive but also lazy - I can be ruthless but I usually have something better to do (even if 'something better' is 'nothing/sleep'). I tend to be either very selfish or very generous, but I'm not very good at maintaining a middle ground between those too. I'm also quite bossy, which sometimes makes me a good leader and sometimes just makes me obnoxious. Maybe a tiger? I'm actually not sure beyond 'probably a large cat' (though who knows, maybe not even that much).

And screw it - seeing as I'm here, rec thread time! Rec your favorite daemonfics here! Any good daemonfic recs for MCU, including Agents of SHIELD? Or any of the ROTBTD fandoms, or Frozen? Or Harry Potter (I've never read an HP!daemonfic), or pre-S5 Merlin? :D

I'd like to think it'd be a little miniature shrunken-down bear, but realistically probably a dog or something of that kind.

Wait, those are the normal rules? Wow, I had completely forgotten them. Maybe I should reread the books.

As for me, I'd know what I'd want to be but not what I am. I guess I don't know myself well enough but really I just thing I'm incredibly biased.

Personally, I'd see you as a snake for much for the same reasons you put. Also because they're normally associated with being smart.

As for recs... I might have a Merlin one but I don't know if it's Pre-S5 because I've never watched the show. What is ROTBTD?

I'll take all Merlin recs, really. I just ask for pre-S5 because I haven't seen it and likely never will. (That said, Merlin fandom is more AU than not, so it's probably a bit of a redundant/unnecessary qualifier).

ROTBTD = Rise of the Brave Tangled Dragons, a very bizarre mishmash of Rise of the Guardians, Brave, Tangled, and How to Train Your Dragon. :)

ETA: I hadn't really thought of a snake, but I can see it. :) Though now I'm stuck trying to figure out what kind of snake...:P

And they aren't exactly rules so much as typical standards. Humans can't be separated from their daemons by more than a few yards or so, so they can't have bird daemons (witches can, and in fact all witch daemons are birds), and any fish daemon needs to be small enough to be carried around in a bowl of some kind or something. In the books, there was a reference to a man whose daemon settled into a dolphin was as such was never able to leave the ocean because he would be too far from his daemon. Witches go through a ritual to separate from their daemons, and they're always birds.

Ahhh, No, I haven't seen and daemon fic for that.

I'm not a snake expert but I will say African Bush Vipers are pretty.

I remember the dolphin thing. I guess I just assumed those were rules they enforced on themselves by believing in them. Not that they wanted to or willingly made it happen. It was just kinda like, "If you believe it that makes it true" kind of thing. (Like the size and fish thing.) For example, Lyra and Will prove that non-magical people can be healthily separated from their daemons and the ritual itself doesn't mean they have to turn into birds. A bird daemon could just stay close to their person. I dunno. I must have missed a lot and forgotten a lot. Ha. Sorry.

Well, I guess one of the problems is that there are multiple dimensions, each with their own rules about daemons, if they have any at all. Will originally didn't have a daemon, and while in Lyra's world only women can be witches, there were other worlds with male witches, too.

So there are a lot of variations of the 'rules' concerning daemons. It's just that those core ones were from the original books so they're the most common version, and usually variations are seen as just that - variations. :)

And damn, now I want a pet African bush viper...

Also, I've read that fic! One of my first daemon fanfics, actually, waaaayy back when the AU craze was just starting to become noticeable in the Merlin fandom. :D *nostalgia re-read*

As far as I remember, while daemons can and sometimes do eat, they don't actually need to. :)

And, cool! Why a Tasmanian devil? (Curious to know).

Oh good, cause I was thinking something like an elephant would be so expensive and wouldn't it suck if you were poor with an elephant to feed.

They're small and stocky, I'm small stocky. They get snarly when upset, I get snarly when upset. They're Tasmanian, I'm Tasmanian. They have an auto-immune disease, I have a (not too bad as they go) auto-immune disease, they like to eat roo, I like to eat roo, they tend to prefer to be alone except for meals, I prefer to be alone except for meals, _{They're a lot inbred, I'm a little inbred hah!}

Also they're really really cute.

A friend of mine once said that my daemon would have to be a fox as I am quite clever, sly as fuck and able to get out of a lot of situations by talking my way out of them, but am also really shy.

That's at least how my friend reasoned my daemon, and though I don't feel like that good of a judge of my own character, I think it fits quite well.

I don't even have a clue what you're talking about, so uh... have a stab at telling me what mine is and what it means?

If I was to describe myself in D&D terms, high INT and low WIS. Seriously, super-genius IQ, but completely inept at figuring out social cues and norms, prone to mentally wandering off into something that is perhaps interesting and complex and creative, but utterly useless. (Think Luna Lovegood. XD) Despite this, if I set my mind to something, I'm incredibly determined and hate hate HATE ever having to give up or give in... but if I get bored or frustrated, I'll take shortcuts, which I also hate because I'm a perfectionist. Have been described as the most introverted person that the speaker has ever met, by multiple people, and can happily go weeks without seeing another person face to face aside from say, the greeter at the grocery store when I venture out to get food. Love my pets though, and interact with and talk to them constantly. And it's not like I dislike people - I just prefer for any interactions I have with them to have some sort of purpose rather than just being around people to be around people. Obsessions include trees and rabbits, and I find outer space fascinating.

...Since I have no idea what this "daemon" thing depends on, I have no idea if there's some other descriptor I should be mentioning... XD

My immediate thought was some kind of bird, but I'm not sure what kind specifically. Maybe a corvid of some kind; they're smart and adaptable.

Heh! Well, if nothing else, I can be... flighty. Also dangerous when something attracts my ire, so if some of the behavior I've seen is common, a corvid could work...

Although wait, the original post mentioned non-magical people not having birds...? Although the amusing thing is, everyone I know who believes in past lives tells me I was either a powerful pagan priestess or a faerie in a past life, so maybe I count. XD

Daemons are from Philip Pullman's His Dark Materials trilogy. They're basically someone's soul in the form of an animal.

Ahhh, okay. I was wondering if I'd seriously missed something since everyone else in the thread just seemed to understand exactly what it was about, hahah.

I don't know if it fits the rules or not, but I reeeeally would love a bitty dragon daemon. XD Failing that, I'd become magical just to get a bird daemon. I love me some birds.

I'm never sure what kind of daemon I'd have but it's something I like to think about a lot! For some reason I often think of it as being some kind of rodent, but IDK what.

On the one hand, I know I'm adaptable and resourceful. I don't have a lot of luck in my life, so I have to work really hard to make something out of what little I do have. I'm also apparently super-responsible and loyal, and I'm a "positive, motivating force." However I was totally unaware that I was any of those things until other people told me; I tend to be really self-critical and anxious and think the worst! (It's a bad habit I'm working on.)

...I honestly don't know, though I feel like both of my favorite animals (wolves and snakes) fit me in some ways (if not necessarily all).

I think mine would be an otter or a dachshund.

Point of order: From what I remember, the rule was that witches only have bird daemons, not that only witches have birds. It's entirely plausible that anybody could have a small bird such as a sparrow or a cardinal without ever really coming across the limits of the bond in any real manner (a few yards is quite a good amount of space if you're the size of a baseball), and while the larger bird daemons would have more of a problem re: wingspan and distance required for effective flight, there's nothing that says they couldn't just ride with their person all the time.

I don't really know about these. So my completely legitimate internet quizzes ~~made by 12-year-olds who can't spell~~ say "raven" (so I'm a witch? Cool!) or wolf.
