I don't think it means you're a bad writer, OP. Tropes are tropes because people like them and identify with them. That's why they turn up again and again, and why people often go looking for specific tropes in a story.

It's great you expanded your writing; that's what writers do. Readers might not adjust well to it because it's new and different, and lots of people don't love new and different things. At least, not right away.

Write what YOU want. Readers are nice, but it's nicer when you're creating what you want to create.
