I'm torn between whether the book version of Drogo is better or not. Like yes, I hate the show for turning what was a sweet, consensual marriage night into yet another rape scene, but on the other hand a bunch of book proponents forget that afterwards that consent kind of goes away for awhile. He's described as only showing up to take her from behind and her being miserable but just sort of putting up with it.

So the book is great because consent, yay! But it does sort of fall into that trap of "once you've given consent, that's it. no take backs."

True. But I prefer the book because consent is acknowledged at ALL and because it's a mixture between good intentions and force of habit. He obviously cares enough about her feelings to not abuse her and I never got the impression in the books that he was raping her after that point, just that she wasn't knowledgeable about sex and didn't know what to do and that he wasn't knowledgeable about pleasuring her either (plus being so used to women of his people being receptive to sex without question based on the display at the wedding ceremony) so sex was just straight awkward for her and uncomfortable. But she was never a sobbing mess the way the show made it seem and she soon took control of their sex life, which he was more than OK with lol

Yeah, the "she wasn't knowledgeable about sex" thing is how I took it, too. I mean, it is entirely possible within Dothraki culture that she really couldn't have said no to him. And extremely likely that just about any culture she'd have knowledge of would have assumed it was her "wifely duties" not to say no (see also: Cersei and Robert). And, like, 99% certain that Dany would have internalized her brother's abuse and threats to such an extent that she felt she couldn't say no at all, ever, whether it was because she needed to secure an heir or just to keep Drogo happy.

The portrayal of a 13-year-old girl learning to love her adult husband who committed marital rape is a narrative that is understandably very, very skeevy to a lot of people, but I think it also reveals a lot of the ways that people did and still often do think about sex within marriage, as well as those boundaries of consent and agency within a situation where choices are powerfully constrained.

I think it's a scenario that would never, ever play out like that in our culture, but it's about the only choice Dany had, and I think she's very admirable for taking it and making the best of it.

Uh, actually she was. She cried every night after he painfully pounded into her and was so miserable she considered killing herself. Book Drogo is no less disgusting (lol let's overlook the fact that he rapes and pillages other peoples homes/Mirri Maz Duur while we're at it) than his show counterpart, no matter how many people try to delude themselves into thinking otherwise.

Fucking THANK YOU I swear those people have only read the wedding scene and blocked out everything else that Drogo did.

it's been a long time since i read the book (and i'm not a drogo/dany shipper) but i have to admit i kind read it the same way. her tears and misery being equally about her situation (sold off to a man she had no common language with etc.) than him raping her, which it didn't feel like to be the case because it wasn't considered rape by any one of them. idk, it was a shitty situation.
