"It doesn't matter how popular ABO fic is in a fandom, if your ABO fic sucks only the die-hards are going to care, and no one else. And if your fic is good, then even if someone doesn't care about ABO fic they'll read yours because it's good, despite the ABO tropes in it."

I'm not sure that's necessarily true. I'm currently editing for a really, REALLY well-written harem romance in my fandom. The story's definitely getting a lot of upvotes, but they seem to be from the same people who typically upvote harem romances starring this protagonist, and it's not getting significantly more attention than most badly written harem romances with this protagonist. (It's kind of disappointing, actually--here this author is questioning some of the basic assumptions that have built up around this kind of story, and it seems like a lot of the people who're leaving comments are just reading it as a typical example of the genre.)

P.S. On the off chance I just made someone curious: http://www.fimfiction.net/story/140468/of-dragons-and-mortals The author's English is a little weak, but he has an instinctive grasp of how to write emotion.

Yeah, people who think they are being clever-dicks by deconstructing, or whatever other bullshit they picked up from tvtropes, are always in for disappointment. Most fans are just there for the warm fuzzies and, honest to Maria, do not want their stock story types deconstructed or questioned or anything like that.

Nah. My trope-challenging ABO series is one of the most wildly popular things I've written, and almost all the comments talk about how pleased the reader is that the narrative went against the usual trends.

*shrugs*

I guess it depends on a lot of factors? I've seen it go both ways. I've seen it go the way I described more often or not, but that may just be my particular fandom experiences.
