And everyone in fucking history. You're completely ignorant if you don't realize that /every culture/ has been through this phase or is now going through it. No culture, not even pure-as-snow OP's, is free from a history where women were likely undermined and owned by men and rape was prevalent.

I'm going to go ahead and be willing to say that GRRM's "world" is generally more over the top and ridiculous in its sadism than real life. Yes, barbaric, horrible, crappy stuff happened irl - even institutionalized - but GRRM's world is so skewed to awfulness that no, I don't think it's an accurate slice of histoyr.
