It means your previous stories were good AND you hit a fandom sweet spot.

The fact that you're getting any feedback at all on the new stuff means you're a good writer. The complaints you're getting because your new stories have taken a different route? Those are the passionate fans you gained from your trope-filled fics. It's one of the risks you take when you branch out. You can find new fans, but some old ones will take it personally rather than it's just you spreading your writing wings.

It seems to happen for both original and fanfic authors, though. The things you work hardest on and are most proud of because they're original? Largely get ignored. Trope-filled dreck? Prepare for squee. It's just how it is. No matter how people opine for originality in stories, they don't know what to do with it when it actually pops up.
