Are they talking about the same fandomsecrets? Last time I checked Moffat and his stories were persona non grata around here. (And, um, historiae non gratae? I forgot latin ok)

Nah, it's still acceptable to like his standalone episodes from before he became showrunner.

Clearly I am not as well-versed on Moffat hate as I need to be!

na

it's true that moffat is generally not well liked here, but I have seen the Weeping Angels come up here quite a bit as being an episode that creeps people out. the episode also came out in a time before the extreme moffat wank as did much of the discussion about it.

sa

Whoops, forgot the episode is actually called "blink". it's just the statues themselves that are called weeping angels

...disregarding the fact that Moffat lifted the weeping angels from The Prisoner by way of Pattern Recognition (for the first episode anyway). Which suggests the man at least has good taste, unfortunately he just has problems translating it to his own writing.

Moffat was fairly popular during the RTD era. His episodes were usually a change in pace from the others in the season, with a strong undercurrent of darkness. A ton of people loved "Blink" when it first aired, because the Angels were new and novel bad guys then. It also wasn't an episode about the Doctor, it was Sally's story-- which I think helped make them scarier, because a normal person (not even a companion with alien experience) who was thrown into this situation had to stop them.

It also wasn't an episode about the Doctor, it was Sally's story a pastiche of William Gibson's Pattern Recognition

Wayyyy back in 2010, I think it was 2010, whenever...way back when FS used to be a lot bigger that weeping angels thing appeared A LOT. But wow, that's going on four years ago. Someone sounds like a bitter ex-FSer.

Try more like 2008-9. "Blink" aired in 2007.

They're talking about a fandomsecrets that's a long time gone, when the comm was still on LJ, and big enough that you could talk about in the same sentence as TVTropes without immediately dying of insane hysterical laughter. What we have now is more or less the rump fandomsecrets. Of course, it's a very sexy cool intelligent rump, and in many ways better.
