Re: What do you like to see in a hurt/comfort fic?

[personal profile] intrigueing 2014-01-19 10:02 pm (UTC)(link)
I dislike both drawn-out, repetitive hurt and drawn-out, repetitive comfort. It numbs the hurt if multiple incidents of hurt keep happening on happening for ages or just makes it irritating and melodramatic. And if the hurt is too detailed and slow-moving, it starts feeling like torture porn and puts me off as well. And drawn-out comfort tends to bore me. Both overlong hurt and overlong comfort is particularly off-putting if the time elapsed within the fic (which is separate from the length/wordcount of the fic, mind!) is too long.

So I prefer my h/c fics to be mid-length, and for the bulk of it to occur over a somewhat short period of time (this depends on the incident, but less than a week in general). I like the focus to be somewhat more on the hurt than the comfort (although I don't like super-long or detailed hurt either, unless it's a plot point). I prefer the comfort to be short but powerful, and I have no desire (except with some specific stories) to see the "entire slow healing process". Just a rescue/escape and enough comfort to reduce, not eradicate, the victim's immediate suffering, is usually enough. (Of course, the opposite, where the comfort fixes the person completely really fast, is also really annoying -- I prefer the fic to end with the promise of complete, slow healing in the future, but I don't have much interest in actually reading through the full process, if that makes any sense.)

Also, unless the fic is quite short, I generally like something to be happening in the story other than just hurt and just comfort. It doesn't have to be a particularly engrossing story, and certainly doesn't have to be a time-consuming story, just as long as there's something to give the hurt/comfort a base and context to rest in, or else it feels like eating chocolate syrup without the ice cream.

(Of course, these are generalizations. There are always exceptions.)

I came here to write this comment- you could be me! Definitely not a fan of the repetitive hurt, and I dislike convalescence fics. I don't want to see a long detailed recovery - it's enough for me to know that someone's been rescued and everything will be okay (eventually).

I think you describe the sort of H/C I like. I get tired of hurt after hurt after hurt, especially if it's coupled with lots of sex as the comfort, but then I don't like really long and drawn-out healing either.

I do however like if there is sex, but not healing cock. Like sex is a sign that things will get better, but they're not totally fixed yet.

Also, happy endings.
