Sci-Fi or Fantasy

(Anonymous) 2014-01-20 12:45 am (UTC)(link)
And why?

Sci-Fi

(Anonymous) 2014-01-20 12:53 am (UTC)(link)
I grew up with it. I don't like fantasy at all, though there's no reason. It's just not my thing.

Fantasy because I tend to like the settings in them more.

gaaaaaaaaaahhhhh why do you make me choose but science fiction. It's science fiction. I think the spectrum of possibilities is more interesting, I think I like the average SF book much more than I like the average fantasy book, and... I don't know, science fiction has always just mattered to me, as a genre, in a way that fantasy hasn't.

I like both, but... sci fi, probably? I love space a lot.

Books: Fantasy
Television: Sci-Fi
Movies: Both.

Not really sure on the divide. Something to do with while I like the aesthetic and themes of sci-fi I dont' particularly care to read about it. I find a lot of sci-fi has a lot of tech talk that bores me, while watching it is no problem.

I like both but I prefer fantasy, dragons man.

dragons man

This is really the only thing that needs to be said.

(I love both too so this is a difficult question, but...I'll agree. I guess. Arg.)

Fantasy. More likely to be written by a woman therefore significantly less misogynistic. Not trolling, nor Radfeming, just pointing out an observation.

My favourite books are usually ones that mix elements of both genres, but if I absolutely had to choose between them? Sci-fi. Because sci-fi has robots and fantasy doesn't. :P

Sci-fi.

I like science, even bogus science.

Both. In the past it's been fantasy more, but in the past year or two it's REALLY been sci-fi. However, I still really love them both.

Sci-fi. Not only does the really good sci-fi have a great point to it, but you can do all sorts of crazy things, like stick fantasy stuff in. "Magic" that's really advanced technology! Dragons that are actually aliens! It's all good.

While I like both, I lean just a little more towards fantasy.

I like magic, and have a long-standing fondness for myths and legends, which usually incorporate it.

I also have a fondness of sci-fi with elements of magic tropes in it, though I prefer to see it done in the "sufficiently advanced technology is indistinguishable from magic" manner (dragons and unicorns are aliens, "magic powers" are just advanced mental skills, "gods" are just advanced aliens), as badly explained mixes of magic and science make me itch.

I prefer things that have elements of both over things that definitely fit into only one or the other.

Sci-Fi. I've just never really been into fantasy and their respective settings. Although I will make a couple of exceptions.

sci-fi, I can't stand elves, dwarves, dragons, medieval times or magic. I think they're incredibly dull and boring.

Definately sci-fi.

I like the themes of sci-fi, such as exploring the human condition, morality vs progress, exploration, scientific ethics, and so forth. Sci-fi is more about examining humanity and how we tick and I always love that.

You also need to actually explain things more in sci-fi. I know, I know, lots of sci-fi is just waving things away with techno-jargon, but there's still plenty of sci-fi who try for scientific accuracy and it's just fascinating. Even better, people are trying to explain how we can do those things really soon, and I love reading a story that is showing an actual possibility of the future instead of one that is impossible to exist.

Also, fucking robots. ROBOTS, MAN. Robots > dragons anyday. ROBO-DRAGONS.

Sci-fi. Fantasy all seems the same to me. I like the stuff that branches out more, and I like stuff that combines science and magic.

I used to be fantasy all the way, now I'm more inclined toward sci-fi.

Why? Ironically, despite being in the theory the only genre where anything is possible, fantasy has a terrible dearth of creativity o_O Same shit over and over again: medieval Europe with magic and dragons. Jesus christ people. Pick a new era/new culture/new fantastical way of making your world not our world.
