I haven't seen the episode - only saw the first season of Sherlock, to be honest. But purely from this community what I gather is:

-Sherlock basically referenced real life fans
-who like slash
-and portrayed them as fat and frumpy (?)
-the portrayal was not super positive

I'm not for fat shaming at all, but I would wonder if the show itself is fat shaming if the only plus size woman they've included is a comic relief. I think it's one thing to poke fun at fans, or give a nod to fan theories/pairings. But I certainly wouldn't want to mock my own fans, or mock shipping pairs seemingly based entirely on the fact that they are gay. (for the record, I thought the fangirl in Supernatural (I only saw up to season 5) was hilarious). I also probably won't watch Sherlock's newest season, so sorry if I've got this wrong. I just would understand being offended.

(And, interjecting, one person of a group not being offended at humor about said group, does not speak for everyone or negate the opinion of anyone who was offended)

Like most UK based shows they cast a higher than average number of regular looking people.(vs Hollywood based productions). I doubt it was deliberate or that any kind of 'shaming' entered into the equation.

Okay... do you honestly think the fangirl's casting was a "random average looking person" casting? Do you think her weight wasn't taken into consideration in the slightest? The show may have some every day looking people, but how many of the women are overweight?

She looks pretty average to me and I think she's rather telegenic

You're speaking to Moffat fans and slash haters. They're not going to see reason.

Moffat's fans are irrational? Please. His hatedom are the biggest bunch of whiny, tinhatted wankers I've ever had the misfortune to come across in twenty years in fandom. Five minutes scrolling through their assorted ramblings make me long for the serenity of Harry Potter fandom circa 2002.

I think it might have been more they wanted to cast Sharon Rooney.

Thin people were offended; we fat people didn't even notice she was fat.

(Anonymous) 2014-01-21 01:28 am (UTC)(link)
"We fat people"?

(Anonymous) 2014-01-21 01:34 am (UTC)(link)
Me and other I've seen comment.

We are a proud people. We were also hiding behind our cheeseburgers at the time.

(Anonymous) 2014-01-21 03:05 am (UTC)(link)
I ain't even mad, bb.

I am fat and fangirl and I didn't notice her size, either. I just saw a Sherlock Lives enthusiast giving shit to Anderson and balancing his wild theories out with outrageous ones of her own.
