Heh. Not in the fandom, but when I saw that bit, I was like, "Ah man that's gonna make somebody mad!" Seriously though, it's OK to show fans on shows who aren't all super cool. I'm just glad Molly is a real character and not getting treated like crap now.

Yeah, see just because you happen to be fat and like slash does not mean that it's a harmless statement or that every other person needs to feel the way you feel. So you're not upset with people mocking you, good for you. I think it's completely a normal reaction to be upset to be mocked, especially by someone you looked up to or admire, and definitely not a case of "taking yourself too seriously".

Well, no matter what wank this secret may cause, know this, OP: I too am an overweight slash fangirl, and I too thought that scene was hilarious.

Of course, I don't ship Sherlock/Moriarty, so maybe that has something to do with it, idk... ;)

Finally got around to watching the opener last night, and given all I had heard I think she was alright. Liked her even, and I especially dug her pointing out the dumb hat rule for Sherlock Club. Sassy fangirl :)

I know nerd portrayal has it's own stereotypes, and I don't really give a fuck about coke bottle glasses and BBT-likes and whatever, but I don't see why the offended types couldn't take it back and own it. I guess they wanted to be "represented" by Becky or something.

Just because you are representative of the group being mocked, doesn't mean it makes it okay for people to mock you (or stereotype you, etc.).

I love that they think she's awesome in My Mad Fat Diary but this, THIS! is a bridge too far

Someone needs to force them to watch Rebel Wilson and Melissa McCarthy stuff Clockwork Orange style until they realize that, yes, fat women are allowed to be funny about being fat women and no, that doesn't make them "self hating."

So a portion of fandom was represented on telly by someone who could have been one of their own, and they were offended. Quelle surprise! And if the actress had been skinny and hot they probably would have complained about plus sized people being underrepresented. Casting directors can't win, can they.

Some people take themselves seriously, and some people simply react differently than you. It doesn't automatically make them uptight or just looking for something to get offended about.

Haven't seen Sherlock, so this is more a general statement, but there's my 2 cents.

I haven't seen the episode - only saw the first season of Sherlock, to be honest. But purely from this community what I gather is:

-Sherlock basically referenced real life fans
-who like slash
-and portrayed them as fat and frumpy (?)
-the portrayal was not super positive

I'm not for fat shaming at all, but I would wonder if the show itself is fat shaming if the only plus size woman they've included is a comic relief. I think it's one thing to poke fun at fans, or give a nod to fan theories/pairings. But I certainly wouldn't want to mock my own fans, or mock shipping pairs seemingly based entirely on the fact that they are gay. (for the record, I thought the fangirl in Supernatural (I only saw up to season 5) was hilarious). I also probably won't watch Sherlock's newest season, so sorry if I've got this wrong. I just would understand being offended.

(And, interjecting, one person of a group not being offended at humor about said group, does not speak for everyone or negate the opinion of anyone who was offended)

My problem with it was the breaking of the 4th wall rather then how they portrayed her. I'm one of those people who feel uncomfortable when fans bring up fanfic to actors so scenes like this make me cringe.

Hmm... I was so unhappy about "His Last Vow" that it drove all of my complaints about the earlier episodes out of my head.

I thought Anderson was more of a mean-spirited dig at the fandom than she was. And she was right about the hat rule.

I'm not outraged or anything, but it did make me a little sad. Just...I wish we could finally reach that mythical place where no one is stereotyped based on their looks OR interests. Yes, I am fat. Yes, I like slash. The two are not connected in any way, and I get tired of the stereotype reinforcement, though doesn't light a self-righteous fire in my soul like it seems to do for others.

It's silly, IMO. The fact that the character was overweight and a fangirl who's into slash isn't insulting in and of itself. She's not portrayed as being particularly dumb or ridiculous, not any more than any of the other fans.

I don't get it. Do slash fangirls feel the need to be represented as twig bitches with expensive fashion sense? Because I've got to be honest. The only slash fangirls I've ever met were either young enough to have fast metabolisms or largely fat and wearing hoodies. Or is it just the effect of seeing weight on television that doesn't happen to be shaped as flattering? Because she looks pretty effing normal to me. Kinda sad in this picture, but then again I've not seen this episode...

They have one example of a slash fan, and they chose to represent that fan with a fat woman, in a culture where fat women are regularly ridiculed. That didn't strike you as a dig at the fanbase?

Eh, it's a little unfair and obviously mocking to make the one fat character a stereotype when you live in a society where the majority of the population (nerd or not) is overweight, like the UK. Realistically, two of John/Mary/Sherlock would be fat, too - it is extremely common for servicemen to gain weight when they're no longer doing PT, as it is for people with newly-limited mobility. This would have been by far the most likely choice, if "realism" (which I see upthread - "what, a lot of congoers are fat!") is an issue.

And yet...
