IDK, IDK

(Anonymous) 2014-01-21 01:27 am (UTC)(link)
I'm a college student. I've been getting financial aid for years. I haven't changed schools, ever. I just got this email from Fedloan:

Dear [me],
The U.S. Department of Education disbursed your additional student loan funds to [school I don't go to that is 300 miles away] on 01/16/2014.

IDK is this a scam, is this government, is this real life... sigh.

Is there a phone number or return address or email that you can google to see if it's a scam? If it's a scam it'll come up pretty easy. If not it's just a clerical error and you'll have to call or message them somehow to let them know and get your stuff sent to the correct place.

Yeah, their number's on their website. I'm currently trying to find the last paper letter they sent me in the mail, because IDK what kind of information they want to verify I'm me.

Although, fuck, it's a federal holiday, so I don't know if anyone will be there to answer.

Yeah, what previous anon said, call Fedloan (even if there isn't a number listed on the email) and personally check on your student loan status. This sounds like a phishing scam, but one that's significantly better at sounding legit than most.

Also, was that the entire text of the email? Is that how emails from your financial aid agency usually go?

It wasn't the entire email. The rest was standard "you owe this much" and "you can repay us any time! even while you're in school!" It pretty much matches the last email I got from them for last term's disbursement (which went to the correct college).

Yeah, definitely check up on that through a medium that isn't email. Hell, you could probably even ask your school's bursar if they've received the money that they should have. If the email text and the sender's email looks legit, this could be a real thing that you need to get on right away.

I called Fedloan, and they said that [school I don't go to that is 300 miles away] is the school they had listed for me. I said no. Gave them the federal school code for [school I actually attend] and promised that I have always gone there. They said they would get it fixed.

Further googling informs me that SIDGTTI300MA's federal code and my school's aren't even close enough to typo. My school code does not contain letters, only numbers.

I have very little hope for this to be fixed without inconvenience. I may still contact the school tomorrow.

Did you shop at Target anytime between Nov. 27 and Dec. 15....

That... That's a good question. Let me see... No and no, according to statements.

Then call whoever is in charge of your finacial aide tomorrow and see if this is some sort of error on their part or scam on somebody else's.

UPDATE

God, I hope they don't set me as attending college in another country now.

Good thing you checked! You should probably follow up on this in a little while to make sure it's been fixed and your real school got the money.
