On the one hand, there is some truth to the whole 'if men got pregnant...' grumblng, but the thing about ED drugs is that sildenafil, which is the active ingredient in Viagra, was initially developed as a treatment for high blood pressure. It was only after it had gotten to Phase I trials (the first step in human testing) did its potential as a treatment for ED become apparent. The other thing to realize is that before Viagra, the treatment options for ED were alprastadil--which is either inserted into the urethra as a suppository (think sounding) or injected directly into the penis--penis pumps, or surgically implanting rods or an inflatable device into the penis. None of these were particularly pleasant treatments.
