I don't have that problem with the Shire or Rivendell, but the "how is this place liveable" feeling bugs the fuck out of me about Rohan and Gondor. Like, seriously, HOW? Meduseld and Minas Tirith are both big steep solitary rocks amidst endless bare, rocky plains that can barely seem to support any grass, let alone enough crops to feed the capitol of a nation. Which, indeed, you don't see fucking ANYWHERE. What the hell do all those people live off of?!?

ayrt and oh my gosh I agree so, so much. It's a problem with the Jackson on a large scale, I think - not the Shire, but with a lot of other places. It's partly a question of "Where the hell do they get their food" and partly that it's just a world that seems like it has no back to it. It's a world of setpieces and surfaces. I really dislike that as a visual style in general, but I think it's especially inappropriate to an adaptation of Tolkien, who I think is very much about giving everything background and place and weight.

Huh? Meduseld is on a rocky hill yes, but that hill is surrounded by grassland. Look:

Oh my god yes THIS was what bugged me. Rivendell is magical, they can live how they please, but the human cities?!
