ayrt and oh my gosh I agree so, so much. It's a problem with the Jackson on a large scale, I think - not the Shire, but with a lot of other places. It's partly a question of "Where the hell do they get their food" and partly that it's just a world that seems like it has no back to it. It's a world of setpieces and surfaces. I really dislike that as a visual style in general, but I think it's especially inappropriate to an adaptation of Tolkien, who I think is very much about giving everything background and place and weight.
