If he's referring to the Civil War General, then it's not really that unusual and I'm a little unclear on why you find it a problem. Claiming that he's related to a General or any figure from American history isn't an automatic claim of pride either, nor is it saying that you agree with everything they did.

If you're not referring tot he Civil War guy then...sorry about this comment I guess.
