Really, you're allowed to acknowledge your ancestry -- and even not hate your ancestors -- without agreeing with everything they ever did.

This. Plus, even if they were bad it is still cool to be able to say, "I was related to _________." It is like you are a tiny little piece of history. Of course, if you mention this you are obligated to learn at least a little bit about them.

If he's referring to the Civil War General, then it's not really that unusual and I'm a little unclear on why you find it a problem. Claiming that he's related to a General or any figure from American history isn't an automatic claim of pride either, nor is it saying that you agree with everything they did.

Especially in this age of nosy fans with internet connects and too much time on their hands. You know someone out there is making family trees of their favorite celebrities. I've got Prussian ancestry, and I find the history of the rise and fall of Prussia quite interesting. That doesn't mean I am all right with everything that happened back then, and it certainly doesn't mean I'm going to start kidnapping tall people to build the ultimate army.

People have made a lot of posts in this thread saying that it's all right to have pride in people from your past, that there's lots of people throughout history who have done horrible things, and that's true, and I agree with it to an extent.

However, I think there's a crucial difference between this case and something like the Vikings or the rise of Prussia. The thing is that the Confederacy isn't really a dead issue the way Prussia is or Viking raids are. There are still people defending the Confederacy. The legacy of the Confederacy is much more of an open question, and defending and honoring a Confederate or being ashamed of him is a political stance in a way that caring about Vikings isn't. The Confederacy still means something.

That said, I don't agree with OP either, because (as people have said) there's no real indication that Fillion was really speaking positively about Jubal Early or doing anything more than noting a coincidence.

Being related to awful people is interesting. I know someone who's great uncle or some such was a murderer who has been featured on those true crime shows (a lot more current than the civil war.) She talks about it because it is interesting. That doesn't mean she is condoning his actions or even proud necessarily. Seems like a silly leap to make.

I'm related to wild west outlaws who were in a famous gang, but also half my family fought on the Confederate side (half of them fought for the Union side, too, so...I guess there is that? It was a war between brothers in a rather literal sense when it came to my family), and my family owned slaves. Am I proud of it? Uh........

Well no, not in the sense that I actually approve of slaves or anything fucked up like that. And the Confederate flag raises my eyebrows pretty quick. But do I find it all fascinating enough to talk about? You bet your ass I do.

She had never met him, and certainly did not condone what he did, but it was an interesting factoid, for sure. She never mentioned it until it was reported he'd died in prison. She said that maybe she could go to a family reunion now.
