I must be missing something. How does speaking about your ancestry equal condoning what they did?

I'm descended from Vikings. Doesn't mean I'm about to go raid the English coast or encourage anybody else to do or imply it's a good thing.

Dude I would totally go raid the English coast again if I had the chance!

VIKINGS TO RULE THE WORLD (Or Britania I guess)!!!!

or you know, yeah not exactly proud of all the stuff my ancestors did...

My Viking ancestors were more scientifically and mathematically minded than myself. They knew how to read the stars and use them for navigation, which I do not. If me and mine set out in a longboat towards England, we'd get lost. And probably end up eating each other. It would be the Donner Party....on a longboat!

I am pretty sure my Viking ancestors got lost on the way to the meeting point before going across the sea to raid Britannia, because that is the only reason I can think of to why I don't have sense of direction at all!

But we have things they didn't! GPS and a ferry that crosses from Norway to England that we could commandeer Jack Sparrow style! So I say we should just try it out! As some of my favourite television presenters say "How hard can it be?"...

That should be a movie.

I demand this movie immediately.

Pssh there's nothing worth pillaging anymore over here, plus you'd just end up neck-deep in chavs.

I've got KGB and most likely bolsheviks as well in my blood over here. No sense hiding that, it is what it is. Plus it doesn't hurt to also mention that that really came back to bite our family in the ass. HARD.

I agree. I'm descended from Spanish Catholics. It doesn't mean I want to raid my neighbor's place and do a Spanish Inquisition.

Though they would not be expecting that...

I'm German. According to the "evil ancestors" logic, that mean I'm pretty much obligated to hate every drop of blood in my veines or something. (even though I'm pretty sure both of my grandfathers were actually very non-Nazi, but yeah, still had to take part in the war.). But by that logic, pretty much everyone should have to hate their family, because sometime, some ancestor probably went to war or was a shithead. They mostly don't have well known names, though.

OTOH you don't see the descendants of any of the prominent Nazi officials claim their ancestors in public. But then the Third Reich it's also much more recent than the American Civil War; who knows what people will do in a hundred years.

(Anonymous) 2014-01-23 01:17 am (UTC)(link)
Not claim, no, but you also can't exactly pretend you're not related to them when everyone knows you are. There are a lot of people, related not only to Nazi officials but also actors who were popular in the regime, who will always have to justify/openly discuss their ancestors. I'm also not sure if "claiming to be related to someone" is the same as "claiming a person as part of your family" - I feel the first one is more of a general observation, fairly neutral, while the second would be the "I'm proud to be related to that person" version, but maybe that's just me.

There's a very interesting BBC documentary called "Hitler's Children" where 5 people talk about their ancestors with such names as Göhring and Himmler and how they deal with having people like them in the family. How they deal with having such a name.

You're doing it wrong. You should be wallowing in guilt over something that happened decades before you were born.

Maybe they, I don't know, KNOW THEIR GRANDFATHERS? Sorry, but contrary to popular belief, the entire German population was not madly in love with the Nazis and with every little bit of Nazi ideology.

Sicilian ancestors over here. I get a kick out of Mafia stories and occasionally doing mob-related jokes, but, y'know, that's it.

I mean, I have friends who actually do have Mafia-folk in their family three generations back. It's kinda cool, but it's not like they're "Aw, yeah, my great grandparents were totally into extortion and killin' folks!"

It's just kinda cool to know something definite about your roots, especially when that something definite is famous or historically significant.

Plus...

(Anonymous) 2014-01-23 03:31 am (UTC)(link)
Plus--same anon here, but it seems pretty reasonable that he would think it was neat and something to bring up, considering Firefly's post-Civil War-esque setting and having a character actually named Jubal Early.
