To Joss Whedon Fanboys

(Anonymous) 2014-01-23 12:36 am (UTC)(link)
I wonder if you even know what a feminist is.

I don't know much about the bald headed man-child, so would you mind answering me this question?

First let's just accept for now your premise that he can even be a feminist instead for just an ally. Has he ever done anything real, anything solid to help or promote womens rights? has he helped or financially supported any organization set up to help women?
Has he in fact ever done anything other than having his masturbatory fantasies put on air, when by sheer coincidence those fantasies coinside with a mid-nineties perception of a strong female character?

I would argue no. I would say Joss Whedon does not even count as an ally, let alone a full blown feminist.

Hold on, let me go grab my spy gear so I can tap into Joss Whedon's financial records and see if he's donated enough to organizations of your liking.

What have you done to help feminism besides complain about people whose fans praise them for writing interesting female characters?

He is a big supporter of Equality Now. I don't know how much he's donated, but they gave him an award, so I assume it wasn't just because he's a swell guy. And there is this thing the fans created to support that charity: http://www.cantstoptheserenity.com/

I've never helped (financially or otherwise) any sort of organization that was set up solely to help women in my lifetime either, but I didn't realize that having the ability to give time or money to a specific cause was the only reason you could be called an ally or member of that cause...

Oh man. If ONLY Joss Whedon would financially support or help some organization that helps women. Maybe something like Equality Now (Striving to eliminate violence and discrimination against women and girls around the world.)? IF ONLY! http://youtu.be/pDmzlKHuuoI Perhaps he could be on the board of advisers? http://www.equalitynow.org/about-us/board-staff

I'll be nice and answer your questions, even if I am pretty sure you are a troll...

1. Who cares if he is a feminist or an ally? Terminology doesn't really matter, he tries to fight for equality and like everyone else on earth he is not perfect.
2. Except creating Buffy The Vampire Slayer? Or any of the other female characters in his other shows, which at the very least helped open up for even more strong/independent/Important/real women on television? Being involved in this: http://www.equalitynow.org/ without doing a lot of research I assume if he has not given any money to it he has at least used his fame to get some money in.
3. See point 2.

Also, I'll tell that to 15 year old me so she knows that when watching Buffy she shouldn't think that because the badass woman on television could be awesome and save the world then clearly I can become whatever the fuck I want too, because Buffy is just a "mastrubatory fantasy".

"Allies"

Post structuralists go home, no-one cares about your opinions.

Re: To Joss Whedon Fanboys

(Anonymous) 2014-01-23 12:54 am (UTC)(link)
He donated a huge amount of money to and promoted Equality Now, an organization that fights specifically for women's rights around the world.

So yeah, he is a huge ally. And speaking as a feminist and a woman, please stop relying on tumblr for your fauxfeminist hateboner for all men.

Re: To Joss Whedon Fanboys

(Anonymous) 2014-01-23 12:55 am (UTC)(link)
Huh. So if your definition of "real feminist" is basically "has a person spent money on women-oriented causes" then ... eh, I'd say about 60-70% of all feminists really can't call themselves that anymore. Because be real, how many of those self-proclaimed(!) feminists would answer "Sure, I have financially supported all of these organisations" when asked? Not a whole lot of them. Slacktivism, tumblr ranting and shouting at people, as well as putting down your signature on an online survey here or there doesn't really count, you know? Neither does posting about ~feminist issues~ on a fandom secrets platform, but I think you already know that.

Re: To Joss Whedon Fanboys

(Anonymous) 2014-01-23 12:55 am (UTC)(link)
While I have issues with some of Whedon's work, but I don't think giving money or not giving money to the "cause" determinate if someone is supporter of said cause.
Besides, representation matters.

As a Joss Whedon fangirl, I think you're being ridiculous and should go back to tumblr, where someone might actually give a shit about your (uninformed, because otherwise you wouldn't ask such a stupid, stupid question with a very well-known answer) opinion.

"I would argue no."

Well, it's sure easy to argue "no" when you have "no" facts, isn't it?

Re: To Joss Whedon Fanboys

(Anonymous) 2014-01-23 01:24 am (UTC)(link)
You didn't even mention the only good reason I've heard people call him Not A Feminist, which is that he had an actress on one of his shows fired because she got pregnant.

I disagree with your premise but I'm going to take this opportunity to say that I absolutely hated that speech he gave where he said both "feminist" and "sexist" are bad terms and was arrogant enough to decide that he had come up with a better term for one of them.
