I haven't seen Frozen yet, but I've heard 'Let It Go' about, oh, 5 more times than I wanted, and I'll join you in thinking Idina's singing wasn't very good. There are 3 or 4 points in the song where I physically cringe at the way she's working her voice.

I was super impressed with Kristen Bell's voice work and singing voice! I hadn't known she could sing so I was really surprised. She was fantastic.

If Anna has been helping you, then I'm glad for that, OP. I like Idina Menzel but I felt that she may not have been the best vocal fit for Elsa. But hey, maybe they wanted her because the story is a bit reminiscent of Wicked.

Between Frozen, the Oz movie they just did, and this upcoming Maleficent movie, it really feels like Disney's been dying to do Wicked. Stop dancing around the issue already and make the movie.

Let It Go is right in the middle of her range where her chest voice goes to head voice, and it's very clear she's straining because of it. Just do not like Idina's voice at ALL in that song.

Elsa gets my all my love because Anna is annoying as shit to me. she's like a ten year old, i can't stand characters like that. but everyone has their own taste and i'm glad you found something that helps you OP.

ia totally about the voice acting part though.

(Anonymous) 2014-01-24 01:27 am (UTC)(link)
Yeah, I get where your coming from. Characters like that can be really grating. At least with Anna there's a halfway decent reason for it - being socially isolated from a very young age isn't a great way to learn people skills. And though I may be remembering incorrectly, what few people she does have to talk to all seem to be members of the palace staff (all older adults); I wouldn't be terribly surprised if they still treated her much like one would a little girl.

Yeah. This pretty much. My personality is closer to Elsa's, and I'm also a cynic and an "introvert". I find Anna annoying as hell (seriously, I wouldn't want to spend 5 minutes with her), specially as the beginning of the movie, but I'm glad that in the end the whole "naive and oh-so-trusting" ideal is stomp on the ground.

Different types for different folks, I'm glad she's helping you OP. Can't love the fan favourite all the time :)

I agree with that last part so much. Idina Menzal can't siiiiing. She has an absolutely terrible technique, she belts like fuck on the high notes, and obviously musical singers don't sing like opera singers, but she sounds all the time like she's trying too hard to be loud.

(Anonymous) 2014-01-24 02:26 am (UTC)(link)
Yes, she's an awful singer, that's why she's been on Broadway for years. Absolutely no vocal talent whatsoever.

Can someone please explain belting to me and what it means and what it indicates, because I've tried to do searches and watch videos but I do not GET it. Is it good or bad or what.

I don't really like to watch Idina herself sing live because I always feel like she's about to bust a vocal chord. There's something...not healthy for her instrument, in her singing, I think. I've seen more than one performance of "Defying Gravity" with her where her breathing was awful and it looked like the only thing powering her through the end was sheer force of will.

(Anonymous) 2014-01-24 01:48 am (UTC)(link)
Wow you have shit taste

OP doesn't need jerks like you

(Anonymous) 2014-01-24 02:59 am (UTC)(link)
Wow someone writes a very personal explanation of why they like a character and you just come in and say something like this.

Asshole much?

Elsa gets love from me because she is the anxious/insecure part of myself that often doesn't get love in real life. I love and cherish the people that support me (like Anna for Elsa), but in the end, loving myself is what comforts me and makes me feel less anxious. In my experience, the supporters do get more love than those suffering, and that's not fair.

Though it's a different story if Anna helps you, because really what helps the anxious/depressed person push through those problems is what matters. Listening to Anna is what works for you, and that's perfectly okay. :)

Elsa fans are probably less likely to be wet blankets about her character or the movie's flaws. Enjoy the thing if it brings you joy; you probably won't rile up any sort of enthusiasm if you call her reprise useless or someone else's singing shitty.

(Anonymous) 2014-01-24 11:48 pm (UTC)(link)
I don't know how it is in the communities you have around but where I talk about the movie people either think they are her or want to fuck her.

Much preferred Anna and Kristoff and I think being around all the people worshiping Elsa, sometimes literally, has made me like her even less. Especially when they go on about how Anna is a slut and terrible because she can't compare to Elsa. Then there are the ones that think that then turn around and ship them together anyway.

I don't think Idina is a bad singer but I don't think she fit the character.

Anna is great and Kristen Bell does a great job with her voice and on her songs, but holy shit how dare you insult Idina

(Anonymous) 2014-02-02 06:01 pm (UTC)(link)
idina's an accomplished broadway star and vocalist, you ain't shit.
