Congratulations on holding a massively common opinion.

Maybe in some fan circles, but let me tell you, in the fandom circle I was in that would not have been a popular opinion, even though a lot of the fandom itself tended to agree with the OP. We "accepted" that we were amateurs who could not possibly emulate the author. And if OP studies literature in school or works in a related field, I can't imagine it would be popular there either. OP might have submitted this as a RL-to-fandom secret, not a fandom exclusive secret.

Point taken, but I thought the secret said "better than official pastiche" not "better than the original author's work."

AYRT

Yes, but my point is that's not something that would go over well for everyone the OP might know.

You were right the first time. That is what the secret says: published pastiches. I sure as fuck don't think fanfic is better than the original author's work!

(Well, maybe in a very few cases, like Twilight, but on the whole definitely not.)

That's...not a bad thought. I should go look for good Twilight fic. I like the world and premise a lot.

There's a fic on AO3 that is a very articulate critique of imprints while still following canon and also manages not to be super fucking creepy.

Thank you for the link, anon! I have to go to bed now but it's marked to read later :)

Every couple that isn't Edward and Bella is a superior couple.

(While morally reprehensible at least Jacob and Renajsldjfwle are interesting.)

"Renajsldjfwle" made me giggle lol.

I don't really mind Edward and Bella, though I wouldn't go out of my way to read them, since there's not a lot to them. I don't like pairing Jacob with Bella very much. Other than that...hm. I like Alice?

Sorry, I meant official couple, not just ship.

Like for real, I'd rather read about Esme and Carlisle's romance than Bella describing Edwards's fucking jawline again.
