I've seen people say the same thing so you're not alone. Is there something specific that makes you cringe, like bad writing or characterization?

Not really... I mean, bad writing/characterization does make me cringe (in all writing, not just fanfiction), but fanfiction that's completely fine in terms of writing quality and characterization gives me secondhand embarrassment too.

I feel the same thing. I haven't seriously read another person's fanfiction in ages because I just feel odd about it... Like it's something very personal that I accidentally saw...
