I can relate, OP.

Most things you do feel embarrassing when you see them again. Including hearing your voice on recordings.

Noooooooooooooo, don't remind me. *cringe*

omg, ugh, yes. My voice is the most annoying voice ever if I'm listening to it. D:

I hate my voice so much, I sound like a little kid in recordings. which means I sound like a little kid to other people, right? I don't sound like that at all to myself.

The whole thing really bothers me because now I wonder what everyone else sounds like to themselves.

I've seen people say the same thing so you're not alone. Is there something specific that makes you cringe, like bad writing or characterization?

Not really... I mean, bad writing/characterization does make me cringe (in all writing, not just fanfiction), but fanfiction that's completely fine in terms of writing quality and characterization gives me secondhand embarrassment too.

That's not that weird, mine (I think) it's worse: I love reading fanfics but writing them makes me embarrased.

A little bit yeah, but as long as you're not an ass about it.

I'm the opposite. I usually don't get embarrassed reading fic but I get so flustered while writing my own that I can't even finish things.

(Anonymous) 2014-01-24 05:49 am (UTC)(link)
This.

And I don't even really write anything that's generally considered embarrassing, like smut.
But apparently typing out completely tame conversations can make me get up and walk away from my computer.

I get that way with papers for school XD
I'm like "I thought it was intelligent but what if it's actually not????" and it's really hard for me to reread.

(Anonymous) 2014-01-24 09:57 am (UTC)(link)
LOL. OMG, I'm not the only one after all!

I've gotten very fussy about fanfic, so I haven't been reading much of it. I feel like there are a lot of people who are writing fanfic and not reading it.

(Anonymous) 2014-01-24 04:06 pm (UTC)(link)
Fussy is right for me too. I think I get overly worked up about how others view relationships between my favorite characters, so I won't read any fics in the fandom I write for. There's a certain popular pairing in my fandom that really squicks me, so I've gotten to the point where I have to actively avoid the fandom altogether.

I don't feel embarrassment so much as anger and hurt, though, so kind of OT.

(Anonymous) 2014-01-24 01:26 am (UTC)(link)
I hate reading my own fanfiction or going back and re-reading old RP's. But I love to read other people's fanfiction.

I get this way about roleplay, even though I don't roleplay (tried several times and I get so regular first-hand embarrassed), and feel awkward when reading them. Although I still manage to love reading them at the same time :|a

Also, I used to have a friend who was very heavy into fandom, but didn't read/write fic because it gave them that second-hand embarrassment. Maybe it's the almost personal factor behind it when it comes to reading idk.

(Anonymous) 2014-01-24 03:03 am (UTC)(link)
Me too. But enough bad fics can actually encourage me to write more to set things right! Especially when they're about my OTP or favorite characters.

(Anonymous) 2014-01-24 03:35 am (UTC)(link)
This way of thinking of it makes me so happy :)

[personal profile] darkmanifest 2014-01-24 03:44 am (UTC)(link)
Yeah, there's a time limit on how long I can read my own fanfiction (and some fanfiction by other people) before I start cringing hardcore. About ten years, give or take. And then it's just like "This is accidentally flashing your Minnie Mouse panties on the train."

''second-hand''?

(Anonymous) 2014-01-24 08:42 am (UTC)(link)

ESL here - is that usage correct? Isn't second-hand embarrassment like when you're cringing because of a character's actions/words (and expecting consequences)? but this is just OP being embarrassed at writing fanfic....?
or is this about OP's characterizations?

Re: ''second-hand''?

[personal profile] sporkly 2014-01-24 09:07 am (UTC)(link)
Yeah, that's exactly it! Being embarrassed by the actions of others.

I'd say the terminology's a little off, but it kind of implies that OP sees their stories separate from themselves.

I don't get second-hand embarassment, but I don't care at all about reading fic, even if I write a lot myself. I just... like pulling things out of my head. I'm not really interested in what others pull out of theirs.
(I don't care at all about people reading my stuff either, I don't even publish most of it.)

(Anonymous) 2014-01-24 10:19 pm (UTC)(link)
Yeah, I get you. Though I usually get second-hand embarrassment when the story is actually, well, really, really shitty (from poor characterization, to overused tropes, to the typical "dark and brooding" male characters). Then again, I also get flustered when I re-read what I wrote.
