ESL here - is that usage correct? Isn't second-hand embarrassment like when you're cringing because of a character's actions/words (and expecting consequences)? but this is just OP being embarrassed at writing fanfic....?
or is this about OP's characterizations?

Yeah, that's exactly it! Being embarrassed by the actions of others.

I'd say the terminology's a little off, but it kind of implies that OP sees their stories separate from themselves.

I read it to mean that reading other people's fic gives OP second-hand embarrassment for the author.

No, it's about OP being embarrassed about reading it, aka, someone else's work. So they're embarrassed for them, yet not embarrassed for themselves, so CONFUSION??>
