Agreed. If you're going to set a slash story in a time/place where no one could be openly gay, you're going to have to either make it an obvious fantasy AU or else work with the fact that the characters would have to see each other secretly.

I wouldn't really mind the costume nit-picking, though. Most people are clearly into these AUs for the costumes, etc. Than a deep interest in the less fun aspects of the time period.
