There's other Stargate characters in the background. Neat!

I love it when people nitpick historical inaccuracies in costuming, but at the same time I realize it's a little anal retentive.

I can see how those things would be annoying. Like, what's the point of nitpicking a gay regency romance? Just shut up and enjoy the fic, reviewers.

(Anonymous) 2014-01-24 12:01 am (UTC)(link)
LOL, I see yr point.

(Anonymous) 2014-01-24 12:04 am (UTC)(link)

I nitpick little things like clothing, food or slang but I also would expect if the story is slash for it to be treated in a historically correct manner. Relationships kept in secret, clandestine meetings, etc... Yeah I find a lot of fanfiction frustrating.

(Anonymous) 2014-01-24 12:07 am (UTC)(link)
Agreed. If you're going to set a slash story in a time/place where no one could be openly gay, you're going to have to either make it an obvious fantasy AU or else work with the fact that the characters would have to see each other secretly.

I wouldn't really mind the costume nit-picking, though. Most people are clearly into these AUs for the costumes, etc. Than a deep interest in the less fun aspects of the time period.

OMG, dat fanart. I love it so, so much; they rock that clothing. Considering the secret I guess it's fanart of a regency fic? I want the link to this fic.

I agree

Not really because of historical acuracy. I just have a thing for secret romances

(Anonymous) 2014-01-24 12:15 am (UTC)(link)
I can understand the desire to pretend homophobia doesn't exist, especially when reading (fanfiction and otherwise) is often an escape for lots of people. I can also understand that people don't want to use homophobia as a ploy for cheap drama in their stories. BUT, it makes me uncomfortable to pretend that in a period in the past, such as Regency, it would have been totally okay and safe to be out of the closet like that.

If you just like the aesthetic of the period, I don't know, at least set it in the Kingdom of Madeupname.

No comment on the secret, I'ma just stare at the artwork for a bit...

(Anonymous) 2014-01-24 12:59 am (UTC)(link)
I guess I can understand your pov, but for me it's not an all or nothing situation. You can choose one aspect to be total AU wish fulfillment while still having standards of realistic representation of the era. Just because you erase the homophobia of the time doesn't mean you have to ignore every other historical aspect.

SO PRETTY!!!! :D

(Anonymous) 2014-01-24 01:16 am (UTC)(link)
My friend reads lesbian romances, and her favorites are the ones I find to be the screwiest - the Victorian or other historical romance. I get there's probably a possibility that two women could live together more or less secretly, but so many of them, one of the women is out and out Gay Proud and everyone's okay with it (if not totally supportive!), and when she hands me those to read, I always giggle myself silly.

So where is all this 1800s slash? As someone who has been thinking about War and Peace (Dolokhov/everyone), I would like to see what other people are doing with the time period.

I agree...to an extent. Personally, I've got a bit of bias since I *like* secret romances but...at the same time? If you're going to set it in an actual time period? You shouldn't ignore what would be something that would have a huge impact on a queer couple if that's what your writing.

That said, it also irritates the hell out of me when people throw out the "Just make it Alternate History!" because they kind of obviously don't quite get how that genre generally works.

McShep ♥ That is some gorgeous art. Now I want to go and read all the historical fic of these two :P I can never get enough.

I do see what you mean about the nitpicking, though. I've wanted to write a historical fic, but I'm worried I'll get things wrong and people will be too disgruntled to read and enjoy.

Maybe they're just interested in aspects of that historical setting but want a fantasy where people weren't bigoted?
