I can understand the desire to pretend homophobia doesn't exist, especially when reading (fanfiction and otherwise) is often an escape for lots of people. I can also understand that people don't want to use homophobia as a ploy for cheap drama in their stories. BUT, it makes me uncomfortable to pretend that in a period in the past, such as Regency, it would have been totally okay and safe to be out of the closet like that.

If you just like the aesthetic of the period, I don't know, at least set it in the Kingdom of Madeupname.

I tend to do this by default with AUs, for BOTH reasons. It gives me leeway for any physical historical inaccuracies that crop up, and it allows me to rejig the societal standards as needed as well.

Failing 'Kingdom of Madeupname', the other option is to pretend it's an alternate history.

Seconding kingdom Madeupname!! Magical prejudice-free kingdoms are the best.

I also can't buy plots that go even further and replace the heroine of a classic regency romance with half a slash pairing. It's just not going to make sense. Unless you're writing omegaverse, I suppose...
