You have no reason to feel embarrassed about reading anything in public. If anyone says anything to you, tell them to go sit on a cactus.

I still read Baby-sitter's Club and Sweet Valley High books from time to time. (and I own a copy of After the Bomb and it's sequel), so you have nothing to be embarrassed about.

OP

I liked AtB and its sequel, too. :)

Sure, they're short, but they definitely get across the fear and uncertainty that even a limited nuclear attack would leave in its aftermath and the struggles of a teenage boy who should just be worrying about his first crush and high school and other ordinary things, but instead he needs to make sure his family just stays alive.

And the War Between the Classes? Maaaan. I thought the racism presented in it was overexaggerated at the time, but re-reading it now? It really kind of isn't. Props to Miklowitz.

Oh yeah, AtB and the sequel definitely left an impression on me with the way it portrayed the attack and it's aftermath.

Never read The War Between the Classes, but now I may see if it's in my area's library system and check it out the next time I'm there.

I...would have no idea that those are 'ya' books, and even if they are - who cares? You read what you read, nobody else needs to worry about it.

Don't feel embarrassed, most people won't care.

A good book is a good book, no matter which audience it's aimed at. I like The Grounding of Group Six and The Westing Game. And I still count Green Eggs and Ham as one of my favorites.

I tell people "I'm revisiting a book I read when I was a kid"--but I'm really not!

This. Screw the haters. And hey, now you got some people here wanting to look into them. Always a plus!

The Westing Game was awesome. Personally, I'm a huge fan of pretty much everything by Lois Lowry because I just love her writing style. It's clean and descriptive without being overly flowery, which I appreciate.

That's one of the great things about ebooks, but a lot of these probably haven't been converted. The top cover is abstract enough, but honestly, random passersby won't care and probably won't instantly know what they are unless they remember those books from when they were in the target audience (that point logo, wow 80s flashbacks) and/or like to read them themselves. You could try something like this if it really bugs you: http://www.etsy.com/shop/HideABook

I occasionally go back and read a book intended for young audiences (sometimes a new one, sometimes and old favorite). Some of them are really good. Don't be ashamed, OP. Read what makes you happy!

Invest in a Kindle or similar. Mine has a fair bit of YA, trashy romance, the odd favourite Fan Fic as well.

THANK YOU OP! I have been searching for After the Bomb for ages. I couldn't remember the title (just remembered the word bomb), or author and wanted to re-read it and the sequel.

Well, most people don't read at all, and people who would try to embarass you about reading this or that are snobs and assholes. Why should you care about their opinion?
Even if you're majoring in a litterature class where this might matter, you can always pretend you're studying the structure / trope / style for an essay.

If it's any consolation, most people are so self involved they won't notice unless you hit them in the face with it. Even if they do notice, in a negative way, you'll know who to stay away from.
