Nope. They are Japanese. They look white to you because you are very Eurocentric. However, to Japanese people they look Japanese. This pops up all the time with Eurocentric people who don't understand how other cultures may view their own art.

Isn't Mikasa the only one who's actually from an Asian country, though?

(Anonymous) 2014-01-25 12:10 am (UTC)(link)
yes

(but I think this was a joke, mocking SJWs)

(Anonymous) 2014-01-25 12:09 am (UTC)(link)
No, they're white. Look at those white first and last names! Eren is German, Levi and Jean are French, Armin is Norwegian or something, etc. Only Mikasa is Japanese.

I was going to bring up their names, but I was wondering if I was just crazy/missing something. :P

Also, the architecture/scenery looks very intentionally European. And Mikasa not being white is pointed out as unusual for the setting.

Eren is a Turkish name. http://www.behindthename.com/name/eren

"Eren" is Turkish, but Eren's last name is Jaeger, which is German.

(Anonymous) 2014-01-25 01:15 am (UTC)(link)
maybe he's turkish-German. If this is the future (or even some eras in the past) that would be pretty likely. Turk-Germans are the biggest ethnic minority in Germany (4%)

And one of my friends has an Arabic name because her parents liked it but she's a white Christian girl.

They are Germans, not Japanese.

That show takes place in Germany? I tried to watch it once but gave up.

Your overall point still stands in that a lot of anime characters are kinda white, though.

(Anonymous) 2014-01-25 12:17 am (UTC)(link)
We don't know yet. Most of the people have German names and surname, so it's safe to assume that they probably came from Germany. But we also know that they aren't living in their homeland because they had to run away to another continent, so who knows. My theory is that they are people from Germany living in America.

In-setting, they're actually white. Try again.

Also, this isn't even a problem, because while it may be OH GOD MORE WHITE PEOPLE to a Western audience, it's slightly more ... exotic to a Japanese one, where non-white is the norm.

Apparently this anime does not take place where I thought it did. My Tumblr education has failed me. I don't care either way. Not an anime I am interested in nor an argument. However, for anyone who says this (I have seen it mentioned for Yu-Gi-Oh and DBZ) of other animes (that do take place in Japan), my comment is true.

They are Japanese.

Actually, no. In this series, the characters ARE European. They have names like Jean and Annie and Levi. There is one that IS Asian, and she's very specifically stated to be the exception.

I Get It

[personal profile] kaijinscendre 2014-01-25 12:18 am (UTC)(link)
I did not realize this anime took place in...some part of Europe. My point still stands for other anime. Have old people not seeing a bear in apologies.

Re: I Get It

(Anonymous) 2014-01-25 12:58 am (UTC)(link)
... is the bear following them?

Re: I Get It

(Anonymous) 2014-01-25 01:07 am (UTC)(link)
Thing is, far as I know, it doesn't even take place in Europe, it just takes place in some world that is not the real world, but is based strongly on Europe. Non-White people, especially Asian/Oriental have mostly died out or something, which makes Mikasa such a special snowflake. To say "they are "x" nationality" is wrong, though, because it's not our world in the first place.

(Anonymous) 2014-01-25 02:12 am (UTC)(link)
That is an excellent apology. :)

Now I must know where this came from? Is this security cam footage or something? I like the way the bear backs up - 'uh oh!' - when they come out the door, and then ambles off once they've safely gone by.

From what I can find it came from some security footage from housing near a golf course.

OP

(Anonymous) 2014-01-25 05:44 am (UTC)(link)
If it was almost any other anime, I'd understand your point. But I get annoyed because this anime is set VERY OBVIOUSLY in a germanic culture/location but people are still acting like brown people live there.

Re: OP

(Anonymous) 2014-01-25 06:27 am (UTC)(link)
... brown people do live in Germany. Point in fact, one of my classmates in college is German and is black. So, yeah. Brown people are there.

Um, the whole story is set in what looks like a fictional version of Heidelberg, Germany. The characters have predominantly German/Germanic names (Erwin, Annie, Armin, Reiner, Berthold, Christa, Connie) with a few French and Turkish names in between (Jean, Eren).

Mikasa is mentioned as being the "last of her race", which caught the attention of the human traffickers in the series in the first place.

I would usually agree with you, but in this case, the characters are supposed to be non-Japanese (except for Mikasa, as mentioned).
