There's actually quite a bit of proof that there were multiple races in Europe since Roman times, actually.

ayrt

but that's not what I was justifying. Europe was still a "white dominated society" - whether or not there were some non-white people there.

It only became a white-dominated society once chattel slavery began to take place. ayrt was right. For example, Roman empire was so successful because they basically took soldiers from everywhere.

I know this place is very anti-SJW and whatever (actually, so am I), but medievalpoc does a good job in showing that "race" as we know it today is quite a modern concept, and all-white Europe is a myth.

What?? Chattel slavery existing during the Roman Empire. The Romans enslaved whole populations; up to 40% of people living in the Roman Empire may have been slaves.

As for the second point, there's a big difference between "all white" and "majority white," and while there were certainly people of color in medieval Europe, medievalpoc does a horrible job backing it up with "evidence" that they basically find browsing art collections and jumping to conclusions without doing any research.

Race-centric chattel slavery.

And I think you should probably look up their sources before claiming that they jump to conclusions. Might make you sound less white.

The modern concept of race and racism in Europe developed concurrently with African slavery, but it was by no means the only cause, or that Europe was a happy multiracial place before 1619. Look at Spain and its history with Moors, Jews and Gitanos, for starters.

Medievalpoc's "sources" are just links to where they find images, or text they copy-and-pasted from somewhere else. The point of the blog is is to apply American views on race and contemporary racial theory to times and places where those things don't make sense at all.

Might make you sound less white.

Yes, whiteness invalidates history, complexity and evidence. Truth is what sounds right to you, as long as if fits in a three-line caption on Tumblr.

Uh, no. That blog might be US centric but it never claimed otherwise. It's a blog on historiography which means examining the whys and hows of history and how it's taught today. History is not taught in a vacuum. Neither is science or anything else.

Honestly you just really sound that you've written it off and not bothered to read anything and I guess if you choose to do that no one can force you to do otherwise.

I don't know why people want to lie about that blog but five minutes on it would illustrate this is not true.

The author has also repeatedly explained that this is not what she's doing.
