Not OP, but a reason could be

"takes place in medieval Europe" or something, which I think is a legitimate reason not to get panties in a twist.

That being said, Attack on Titan is a futuristic society so I'm not sure why everyone would be so white - even future Europe has got to have lots of races represented - but whatevs. I like the series but I found the whole "Mikasa is the last Asian!" to be Japanese back-patting about how special they are. And considering there are a ton of Asians all over the world, it's weird how one race could be wiped out like that. Apparently black people weren't even lucky enough to have one survivor. lol

(Anonymous) 2014-01-25 12:21 am (UTC)(link)
It's not really futuristic in the sense you'd usually think, is it? Rather, it's a society that became isolated sometime in the Middle Ages (or something) and has kept growing smaller and more isolated since. Mikasa is only the last Asian in that community. There could still be other communities out in the world at large for all the characters know.

(Anonymous) 2014-01-25 12:23 am (UTC)(link)
There's actually quite a bit of proof that there were multiple races in Europe since Roman times, actually.

(Anonymous) 2014-01-25 12:39 am (UTC)(link)
ayrt

but that's not what I was justifying. Europe was still a "white dominated society" - whether or not there were some non-white people there.

(Anonymous) 2014-01-25 01:36 am (UTC)(link)
It only became a white-dominated society once chattel slavery began to take place. ayrt was right. For example, Roman empire was so successful because they basically took soldiers from everywhere.

I know this place is very anti-SJW and whatever (actually, so am I), but medievalpoc does a good job in showing that "race" as we know it today is quite a modern concept, and all-white Europe is a myth.

(Anonymous) 2014-01-25 04:00 am (UTC)(link)
What?? Chattel slavery existing during the Roman Empire. The Romans enslaved whole populations; up to 40% of people living in the Roman Empire may have been slaves.

As for the second point, there's a big difference between "all white" and "majority white," and while there were certainly people of color in medieval Europe, medievalpoc does a horrible job backing it up with "evidence" that they basically find browsing art collections and jumping to conclusions without doing any research.

(Anonymous) 2014-01-25 01:06 pm (UTC)(link)
Race-centric chattel slavery.

And I think you should probably look up their sources before claiming that they jump to conclusions. Might make you sound less white.

(Anonymous) 2014-01-25 03:12 pm (UTC)(link)
The modern concept of race and racism in Europe developed concurrently with African slavery, but it was by no means the only cause, or that Europe was a happy multiracial place before 1619. Look at Spain and its history with Moors, Jews and Gitanos, for starters.

Medievalpoc's "sources" are just links to where they find images, or text they copy-and-pasted from somewhere else. The point of the blog is is to apply American views on race and contemporary racial theory to times and places where those things don't make sense at all.

Might make you sound less white.

Yes, whiteness invalidates history, complexity and evidence. Truth is what sounds right to you, as long as if fits in a three-line caption on Tumblr.

+1

(Anonymous) 2014-01-25 06:00 pm (UTC)(link)
Uh, no. That blog might be US centric but it never claimed otherwise. It's a blog on historiography which means examining the whys and hows of history and how it's taught today. History is not taught in a vacuum. Neither is science or anything else.

Honestly you just really sound that you've written it off and not bothered to read anything and I guess if you choose to do that no one can force you to do otherwise.

I don't know why people want to lie about that blog but five minutes on it would illustrate this is not true.

The author has also repeatedly explained that this is not what she's doing.

No one said that other races were wiped out. The people inside the walls believe them to be the last survivors of humanity, so they assume that everyone else outside the walls are dead. But this is just bullshit, we don't know anything about the outside world. Maybe the titans only appeared in Europe, or maybe people in other continents have their own walls.

Futuristic?
Their only advanced technology is the gear used by the army, period.

(Anonymous) 2014-01-25 12:29 am (UTC)(link)
I'd say the technology used to turn humans into titans is pretty advanced too. But maybe that's just me.

(Anonymous) 2014-01-25 12:41 am (UTC)(link)
I was under the impression that due to being shoved back behind walls, technology got mega downgraded. since they have to stay in the walls, they can't get all the resources they need for whatever, or can't justify making it. Most of their technology is premodern, but there is random modern and/or futuristic stuff (like titan potion). I could be totally reading this wrong, though.

(like titan potion)

Hee!
...
Wait, they don;t actually use that term, so they (I've only seen the anime)?

(Anonymous) 2014-01-25 01:53 am (UTC)(link)
I'm really curious why you thought that, since there is nothing that hints to the SNK as futuristic.

If anything is the opposite (with very few exceptions, like the unconfirmed Titan potion and the 3d gears): they don't even have one method of communication at distance other than smoke and they use candles and so on.

There hasn't even a hint that the world before had anything more advanced. Actually, if I remember correctly, wasn't there a mention than shotguns and cannons were invented before the walls? And those models are pretty old.

And even with the lack of resources inside the walls, they had the means to mass produce 3D gears and other weapons, so why there hasn't been invented anything else? If there was, I'm sure we would have seen something the few times we have seen nobles.

(Anonymous) 2014-01-25 12:45 am (UTC)(link)
... "futuristic" doesn't necessarily mean "advanced technology".

It takes place in the future. Bad things happened. Society regressed.

(Anonymous) 2014-01-25 01:43 am (UTC)(link)
But there is no hint of it being "the future". Not in the novels narration, not in the setting, not in the author interviews, not in nothing.

The closer thing to a "hint" could be their technology, but if anything that points that there either was a extreme regression (not impossible, I won't deny that) or that they actually advanced very little from what they had before the Titans, which would point to a non-futuristic setting.

I found the whole "Mikasa is the last Asian!" to be Japanese back-patting

Oh God, yes. If there were ever to be a ridiculous situation where there was literally only one Asian person left in the (known) world, and for them to end up in a place on the European continent, it would be very statistically unlikely that they would be Japanese. They'd most likely be from China or India, followed by a few dozen other Asian countries before JAPAN.

(Anonymous) 2014-01-25 01:33 am (UTC)(link)
NA

I agree, it was really annoying to have Mikasa be the last Asian (Japanese).

We Asians sprout like bunnies, just ask the Chinese :p

(Anonymous) 2014-01-25 02:01 am (UTC)(link)
For all we know Titans could be an Euro-Asian issue, so everyone in Africa, America, Australia and many island around the world are enjoying their lives Titan-free.
