It's not a perfect word, but it does the job, I think.
ETA: Yeah, I can see where people are coming from. I'm sorry. It is what it is, but I agree, it's not a good word for this situation. It's not my intent to imply that adoptive siblings aren't fully siblings because they definitely are.
I do think maybe for some people the squick comes from the possible inbreeding, and for others the psychological bit, and for some both. But yeah, it's still incest. I can see calling it "adoptive incest" maybe but I can see why "pseudo" isn't a good choice.

(Anonymous) 2014-01-25 02:04 am (UTC)(link)(But in all seriousness, calling it pseudo incest is basically saying adopted siblings aren't "real" siblings. Never a good idea.)

Just because people have an issue with the term "pseudo incest" doesn't mean it's not a term that's used in reference to incest between non-blood related siblings. I'm not arguing it's not incest for non-blood relations to have a sexual or romantic relationship, but pseudo incest IS a term that is commonly used to describe that kind of relationship in fandom and popular culture because the colloquial definition of incest is a sexual/romantic relationship between blood relations.

(Anonymous) 2014-01-25 02:35 am (UTC)(link)Too bad. You brought it up.
Pseudo incest as a term is used almost exclusively to talk about a category of erotica. Bring me a nice article with the term used in seriousness rather than to justify some sort of stepfather/stepdaughter porn, and then we'll actually be on the same page. Until then, it offends a lot of people with every right to be offended, and you deserve to get dogpiled for it.

The wiki article on incest in pop culture specifically mentions that pseudo incest regards non-blood relations, step and adopted siblings. Fact: pseudo incest is a term that is commonly applied to the Thor/Loki ship. You can look at tags for the ship on AO3 to see that.
I consider pseudo incest to be a fandom related descriptive term for a certain act or relationship, similar to using the terms dub and non con to describe rape in fiction and fandom. Like I wouldn't say pseudo incest isn't incest, I wouldn't say dub or non con isn't rape.
So, you can quibble with me all you want about my usage of the term, but, like I said, just because you don't like the term doesn't mean it's not applicable.

(Anonymous) 2014-01-25 03:15 am (UTC)(link)To me the term incest is strictly for those related by blood. I don't clutch my pearls if I hear about step or adopted siblings banging each other the way I would if they were related by blood.
So yeah, pseudo incest works for me as a term to describe a sexual/romantic relationship between ADOPTED/STEP siblings. So Thor and Loki fucking isn't real incest, just bad taste on Thor's part.
This is assuming it's all consensual and "incest" isn't being used as some sort of code word for "sexual abuse".
