Yeah, I'm not 100% sure if it's the modern sensibilities or just their characterization, but I feel like neither of the leads in BBC Sherlock even resemble the original characters.

I actually think Freeman's Watson is really good, and honestly it's the only thing that I unambiguously like about BBC Sherlock. It might just be that his version lines up really well with my own headcanons and interpretations about the original stories, but I really think that once you adjust for the different time periods, he's very close to the original character. He's brave, intelligent, has similar quirks and attitudes to original Watson... I don't know, he just fits my mental image of the character really well.

Just my 2 cents.

DA

I personally disagree, but the thing about Watson (and Holmes too) is that they have so many intriguing empty or ambiguous spaces in their characterization that there's loads of room for multiple different headcanons that have equal support (or lack thereof) from canon. I think a big reason everyone liked Law!Watson and Freeman!Watson is because they are both quite different from all their predecessors in several ways, but still canon-compliant in the sense of tapping into and expanding those "what if?" hints.

It's the ones that go explicitly against canon evidence that are the problem...*eyes long history of Rathbone-influenced rubbish*

This so much.

It can be a positive thing, but mostly I see the whining of people saying 'It's nothing like the original!!1!!' as 'It's nothing like I imagined it to be!!1!!' And I'm not just talking about Sherlock here...
