I saw some crossover fanart involving that particular Q where the other character's speech bubble addressed him using "Quentin" and I was really thrown off thinking: wait, what? Since when did Q stand for a name? Isn't it Quartermaster? They even say that word in Skyfall!

EDIT: Though I will concede maybe people get it from the fact that in the Craig films at least M is established to come from a name. The Q thing still bothers me however.

All of the explicitly named Ms, except for Admiral Hargreaves (played by Robert Brown from Octopussy until License to Kill) have surnames that begin with M - Messervy (the books, and all the films where he's played by Bernard Lee - as a bonus, his first name is Miles), McTarry (1967 Casino Royale), Mansfield (Dench), and Mallory (Feinnes).

Ah thank you - I admit I'm great at remembering details about the older Bond canons as I am the more modern interpretations. So with that sort of history with M I can see why people may think that Q is the same, even though it isn't.

I will confess that when I was younger I assumed M must mean something like master/mistress because Q meant quartermaster - it made sense to me! I guess what I'm saying is I am sympathetic to the people who want Q to mean *insert name here* even though it bugs me.

I could have sworn I read somewhere that in one of the books that Q was revealed to be named Quentin, I can't find it now but I thought I read it somewhere before.
